LEAK Sandwich 100 compact speaker test: classic look with modern technology at a fair price | News

With the Sandwich 100, the British brand LEAK offers an elegant new loudspeaker in a classic design. REWIND listened and investigated. Is this just retro design, or does it sound good too?
British speakers have always had a very special reputation. Names like Rogers, Graham, Harwood, Harbeth and others are considered by many connoisseurs to be sonically unique and fascinating, at least since the success of the famous BBC monitors LS3/5a. The speakers often have the 2-way concept in common. Compared to concepts with more frequency paths, this has the advantage of using a crossover that is comparatively easy to control and has little impact on the sound, which makes the speakers sound more harmonious. But it’s also about a certain British sound, which perhaps for photography enthusiasts can be compared to the famous Leica look. So nothing really tangible or measurable, but above all a kind of character trait.

LEAK, a brand that disappeared into obscurity for many years and was revived at the beginning of the 2020s, also wants to blow this horn with its models – especially with the retro Sandwich series. The smallest loudspeaker in the Sandwich series, the 100 model tested here, at least has all the technical requirements for it. And with a pair price of around 650 euros, the speakers are in a very affordable range that is also within reach of students and trainees. Their vintage look with beautiful wood veneer, which is based on the concepts of the 60s to 80s, of course plays an important role, because this design is very timeless and can also appeal today and even in modern interiors.
Classic look, modern technology – LEAK Sandwich 100 (649 euros/pair)The only question that remains is whether and how good the sound is and whether it has that certain British touch that many people love so much.
Before I go into detail, here is a note on the other models in the series and the rest of the speaker range. The Sandwich 100 are the smallest in the series. There is also the Sandwich 150 (also 2-way) and the Sandwich 250 (3-way). Which model you choose depends not only on your budget, but also on your requirements, the size of the room and the installation options.
