Robotic lawnmower for large and demanding lawns

Anyone who manages a property with more than 3,000 square meters of lawn knows the problem. Conventional robotic lawnmowers quickly reach their limits on slopes, uneven ground or simply because of the sheer surface area. This is exactly where the Navimow X4 Series comes in. With the X430 and X450, Segway Navimow is aimed at private properties and semi-commercial green spaces up to 5000 square meters.

What it’s about – and for whom

The technological basis is the EFLS™ NRTK system – a sensor fusion of triple-band RTK positioning and a 360-degree camera system, not a LiDAR. We tested what this means in practice over several weeks on a test site with a pronounced slope, exposed tree roots and changing ground.

About the Navimov X4 Series

Theory and reality of four-wheel drive

The manufacturer states a climbing ability of 84 percent – that corresponds to an angle of inclination of 40 degrees. In the test we wanted to know whether this number holds up under real conditions.

On a side-sloping section of slope with an incline of around 35 degrees and wet grass – conditions in which a two-wheeled model had already drifted uncontrollably during the preliminary test – the X4 series remained stable on course. The 5:5 weight ratio between the front and rear axle is particularly noticeable in such situations. There is no slipping, no ruts and no deviation from the planned route.

However, it was only after a few days that we realized what the adaptive suspension system could do. Because on a section with exposed oak roots, over which we deliberately sent the device, the cutting height remained consistent without chattering or bottoming out.

Lawn protection: where the difference becomes visible

Shear forces during turning maneuvers are a real problem in practice. After a few weeks of mowing, you can see exactly how hard a robot is working on the lawn at the pivot points. After four weeks of cornering maneuvers on the

The traction control system was particularly noticeable after periods of rain. On wet clay soil, where wheels quickly dig in without active traction control, the robot remained mobile throughout.

The Dual Cutting System (with a caveat)

43 centimeter cutting width, two discs, twelve blades. This is a real advantage in large, open areas. During a test run on a 1200 square meter area with even vegetation, the X4 delivered a clean, consistent cutting image.

The device is particularly impressive in dense vegetation: the 180 W dual drive cutting motor drives a 0.9 mm thick blade and ensures an even cut regardless of the lawn condition. In practice, this system has proven itself brilliantly: even with grass that is around 20 centimeters high, the first pass produces a clean and even cut.

Navigation: Network RTK in everyday life

No base station, no breakout cables – the installation was actually as straightforward as Segway Navimow describes it. At the test site, the initial setup, including mapping, was completed in around 5-10 minutes.

The positioning stability under a dense canopy of leaves proves to be absolutely reliable. Even in demanding passages where treetops and building walls meet, the robot keeps its track precisely and with centimeter precision within the trained zone.

EdgeSense™ mows within five centimeters of the lawn edge. On straight fence lines the result was clean.

Automatic mapping via GeoSketch™ provides a precise basis for the digital garden plan. Even in demanding test gardens with narrow spaces and buildings, the system impresses with its intelligent obstacle detection. The ability to individually refine zone boundaries allows for a configuration that is perfectly tailored to the garden. The Navimow can easily handle any type of property with minimal setup effort.

120 zones – and what you need from them

The Navimow app allows you to manage up to 120 zones. For the typical private garden, this is far more than necessary. But if you want to manage a larger property with different lawn areas, different cutting heights and individual mowing windows, you will quickly learn to appreciate the granularity.

The VisionFence™ technology sets standards in object detection. Whether it’s a bike, a bed or garden furniture – the Navimow always navigates precisely and safely. The system also proves its intelligence when faced with dynamic challenges: the robot learns from every situation at lightning speed. While he stops safely the first time he encounters a pet, he immediately adapts his strategy and proactively chooses a wide detour the next time. This adaptive intelligence guarantees a smooth mowing process without any delay.

Conclusion

What surprised us most after several weeks was less the climbing ability – which is what we had expected – but the combination of all-wheel drive and protection of the lawn. Optimizing both at the same time is not technically trivial, and the X4 solves the conflict of objectives convincingly.

For large lawns with slopes and the desire for real automation, the Navimow X4 is one of the few Robotic lawnmower on the market that actually delivers on the promise of fully automated care under difficult conditions.
