Walmart has leaked a PS5 version of Gears of War: E-Day, raising doubts about Xbox exclusivity. The release date for the pre-listed pre-order offer could be announced at the Xbox Games Showcase Direct. Some fans would like Microsoft to reserve more first-party projects for its own consoles.

A Walmart leak may have confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day will be a multiplatform title. The now-deleted pre-order listing for a PS5 version of the Standard Edition appeared ahead of the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. Supporters have increasingly pushed Microsoft to reintroduce Xbox-exclusive games to consoles.

Another PS5 release at launch?

The $99.99 price tag for the third-person tactical shooter is likely a placeholder. It is possible that the entire site was an error, but the retailer has published correct information prematurely several times in the past. Viewers should get a comprehensive overview, including gameplay, during their own direct on June 7th. Buyers could also find out the Gears of War: E-Day release date and pre-order details.

Microsoft has not yet made it clear which platforms the latest project from The Coalition studio will appear on. However, with other first-party titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved coming to the PS5, most players expect E-Day to follow suit. The fact that the Walmart listing was already online also suggests that it will be published on multiple systems at launch.

The Games Showcase reignited the debate about the importance of Xbox exclusive games. Many fans complained when they realized that the event would once again promote competing consoles. CEO Asha Sharma had earlier said that the company is rethinking its multi-platform strategy. In response to the criticism, Microsoft may limit the use of logos from competing platforms in future broadcasts.

Microsoft and the exclusives

Some analysts believe the publisher could emulate Sony’s approach. Sony has ported single-player titles to the PC, but has so far decided against doing so on Xbox consoles. New leaks now suggest that Sony wants to limit everything to the PS5, apart from possible live service multiplayer games.

Gears of War: E-Day should offer multiplayer options when it releases. Otherwise, players can expect a narrative-driven solo experience. The game could have been a candidate for exclusivity, but Microsoft also has to take into account the weaker distribution of its own hardware. Recently, there have been signs that sales have improved as part of a “Return to Xbox” initiative.

The Xbox Games Showcase starts on June 7th at 7 p.m. German time. The direct for the Gears of War prequel will be broadcast directly after the live stream.
