Since we have recommended so many current Netflix series to you over the last few years and it was often the exciting stories that particularly excited you and us, it is high time for a best-of!
Here they come together: the (in our subjective opinion) most exciting Netflix series! With lots of unexpected twists and “you can’t watch because the plot is so captivating” moments.
Fifteen exciting series on Netflix
House of Money
Hardly any Netflix series generated such worldwide hype as House of Money. And rightly so, because the Spanish series is not only very well implemented, but also incredibly exciting. The story in short: After years of meticulous planning by the so-called “professor”, a team of (small-time) criminals breaks into the state banknote printing factory and thereby carries out the largest robbery in the history of Spain! Particularly clever: the money is printed while the employees are being taken hostage, so no one is robbed.
But of course, despite perfect planning, not everything goes as planned and the team has to improvise… And as a viewer, you are clearly on the side of the (mostly very sympathetically portrayed) “criminals”.
The Beast in Me
One of the best Netflix series of last year and so incredibly exciting that you regularly take your breath away while watching it – not least because Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys play their roles outstandingly. I don’t want to spoil anything, but briefly about the plot: Acclaimed author Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes), who is marked by deep personal grief, withdraws from public life after the loss of her son. That changes when her rich and mysterious new neighbor Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys) piques her curiosity. The real estate billionaire was suspected of murder after his wife disappeared without a trace. As Aggie tries to uncover the truth about his past while confronting her own inner demons, she finds herself increasingly drawn into a dangerous game of cat and mouse.
You – You will love me
The story about book seller Joey is also absolutely captivating. There are now four seasons of the series – and each one is very exciting and has many unpredictable twists and turns. In the first season, Joe falls in love with Guinevere Beck, who everyone calls Beck. Thanks to her presence on social media, he quickly knows everything about her – and his infatuation turns into an obsession. Joey will stop at absolutely nothing to win over the woman of his dreams. Pssst: Apparently the long-awaited fifth season is coming soon!
Dear child
In the middle of the night, a woman is hit by a car in the forest and seriously injured. As she fights for her life in the hospital, her young daughter tells the night nurse an extremely disturbing story about her home. And suddenly a missing person case from 13 years ago comes into focus. But something doesn’t add up at all. Dear child is one of those series that really makes your blood run cold.
The Sinner
The first two seasons of the thriller series in particular are highly recommended! Each of the seasons features different main actors and has a completed storyline. Investigator Harry Ambrose is the only cast member to appear in every season. By the way, I thought the first season with Jessica Biel in the lead role was the best.
About the plot: The young mother Cora brutally stabs an unknown man out of nowhere while on a trip with her husband and little son. She later says that she had no idea why she committed this act. A search for why begins, in which incredible human depths quickly open up…
Dark
The German production is one of the most popular Netflix series ever. The plot, with its many jumps in time, is extremely complex, which is why you should pay close attention and notice every detail. There are many surprising twists and turns and the story is very captivating: an exciting thriller with just the right pinch of mystery. And what is it about? About children who have disappeared without a trace, dark family secrets and a journey through space and time. “The question is not where. But when”says the series teaser. You should definitely find out what that means!
Lupin
The star of the French series is Omar Sy as Assane Diop, who wants to avenge his father’s death in Paris. To do this, he takes on many different roles, inspired by the master thief Arsène Lupin. An absolute top series that immediately captivates the viewer. In addition to an exciting story, it also brings up socio-political topics and is accompanied by wonderful impressions of Paris.
Unbelievable
A very moving series that touched me deeply. Especially since it is based on a true story. And the individual characters are incredibly well cast. The story: A young woman is raped. Since she comes from a difficult background and her statements involve contradictions, those around her doubt her story. Worse, the police even accuse her of making up the story. She withdraws her statement out of fear and uncertainty. And that has dire consequences.
Stranger Things
The series finale of one of the most successful Netflix series has just been broadcast: Stranger Things. The series is a gripping mix of mystery, horror and coming-of-age and has thrilled for years with its strong characters, emotional depth and consistently high tension. It takes place in the fictional town of Hawkins in the 1980s. The plot begins with the disappearance of teenager Will Byers, after which his three best friends go looking for him and come across the mysterious girl Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown, who became a superstar through the series), who has paranormal abilities. Together they uncover supernatural events and secret government experiments.
How to Get Away with Murder
When you consider how fast-moving the streaming world is, this is what counts How to Get Away with Murder almost to the oldies. The first season aired in 2014 and the series was such a success that six seasons were filmed as of 2020. The series focuses on criminal defense attorney Annalize Keating (played by Viola Davis), who teaches the “Introduction to Criminal Law” course as a professor at the renowned Middleton Law School. She prefers to call it “How to Get Away with Murder”. A situation quickly arises in which your students have to put what they have learned into practice themselves.
Seven Seconds
A realistic, moving social drama with very current topics: racism and a lack of empathy. The story: A white police officer in New Jersey runs over a black boy. His troop is trying to cover up this crime – because no one would believe the accident version anyway, as the current situation surrounding police treatment of African Americans is very difficult. But the public prosecutor in charge doesn’t believe the story, goes looking for clues and finds some inconsistencies. But many people are concerned that the truth never comes to light…
Adolescence
The British miniseries Adolescence is about 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who stabs a classmate at his school. Maybe not “exciting” in the classic sense, since it’s clear from the start who the perpetrator is, but the story behind it is incredibly captivating and moving. Each of the four episodes is shot as a continuous one-shot in real time and told from different perspectives – including police, psychologist, family and school. Initially unusual to the eye, but extremely impressive. The series is definitely not light fare, but it is definitely worth watching. It highlights topics such as online radicalization and the limits of education and is extremely intensive and socially critical.
Anatomy of a scandal
Sienna Miller and Rupert Friend are the (perfectly chosen) leads in Anatomy of a scandal. An extremely exciting thriller with many surprising twists. The plot: The lives of the aspiring young politician James Whitehouse and his wife Sophie are thrown into disarray when he not only confesses to her of an affair, but shortly afterwards the accusation of rape is raised. A very exciting story that focuses on abuse of power and different perceptions of the truth.
She knows about you
If you started this series and asked 1,000 people to guess how it would end, no one would give you the right answer. By the way, I found the series very exciting even though I already knew Sarah Pinborough’s book and so the ending didn’t come as much of a surprise to me. The story about a very unusual love triangle is complex, nerve-wracking and you would like to see it through in one sitting. If you love exciting psychological thrillers as much as I do, then you definitely shouldn’t miss this series!
A new summer
The star-studded mini-series with Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber and Dakota Fanning takes us into the world of the super-rich. On the island of Nantucket, friends and family gather to celebrate the wedding of Amelia and Benji – son of matriarch Greer Garrison. On the morning of the wedding, the body of a guest is found and the big question of why and the search for the perpetrator begins. Little by little, many abysses open up and the family idyll crumbles. Exciting until the last minute.
Which of the series presented have you already watched? Which of these did you like the most? And which super exciting series is missing from this list?
