Now in its 19th season, the successful VOX start-up show “The Lions’ Den” (DHDL) is once again all about spectacular business ideas, extraordinary pitches and competitive deals. Tanera Skin from Berlin
With Tanera Skin, founder Isabelle Stortz (28) is bringing a startup into the cave that is dedicated to a skin problem that many sufferers hardly talk about: keratosis pilaris, medically known as keratosis pilaris. It affects an estimated 30 to 40 percent of people. “Millions of people have grater skin and yet there are hardly any products that are really tailored to it. With Tanera Skin I would like to finally give those affected solutions that have been developed specifically for this type of skin,” says Isabelle Stortz. The 28-year-old founder knows the problem from her own experience. Since childhood, she herself has suffered from keratinization disorder, in which too much keratin clogs the pores and small, rough bumps and red dots appear, especially on the upper arms and legs. She searched in vain for suitable products for a long time and finally decided to develop a solution herself. With Tanera Skin she wants to build a specialized skin care brand for those affected. Their first product is a specially designed exfoliating glove made from biodegradable viscose. Thanks to a special weave, the material changes when it comes into contact with water, becomes firmer and is intended to specifically loosen dead skin cells without additionally irritating the skin. In the future, the founder is also planning additional care products such as creams with active ingredients such as salicylic acid or urea. In the “Lion’s Den” Isabelle Stortz offers 200,000 euros for 15 percent of the company shares in order to expand product development and scale Tanera Skin internationally as a brand. Drum revolution from Berlin
For a moment the cave becomes a music stage and for Ralf Dümmel a childhood dream comes true. When founder Andreas Schneid (44) presents his startup Drum Revolution, the investor can grab the drumsticks himself. As a child, the investor really wanted to learn drums – but instead of a drum set, he was given an electronic organ. In the cave he now gets his second chance. Drum Revolution is a computer game that combines music learning and gaming. The game is not played with a controller or keyboard, but with real drumsticks on an electronic drum set. Only those who hit the right drums and cymbals can control the character through the levels and learn the drums at the same time. The founder himself worked as a professional musician and drum teacher for over 20 years. With his game he wants to make it easier for people to access music – especially children or beginners who have difficulty with classical lessons. In addition to a sense of rhythm, the game also trains coordination, motor skills and concentration. “With Drum Revolution I want to give as many people as possible access to the drums. You concentrate on playing – and don’t even notice that you’re learning an instrument at the same time.” In order to further develop the learning software and reach more people, Andreas Schneid needs 150,000 euros and is offering eight percent of his company shares.

Battle pitch: Boggl from Dortmund & Davy Barkmo from Winnenden
In the battle, two startups compete directly against each other and each have 60 seconds to convince the pride of lions of their idea. Only those who win this battle will get more time with the lionesses and thus the chance to win the important deal. David Tenné (29) and Morice Ziegler (28) want to impress with an innovative dog food bowl that functions as an intelligence toy. Julia Davids (42) and Cornelia Puffer (46) also present BOGGL, an activity toy for dogs. Who is ahead in the end?

Sleep better, breathe more freely: With their startup VENTICROSS, the founders Ignasi Selga (46), Carolin Abraham (44) and Heidi Depner (40) want to solve a problem that affects millions of people – restricted nasal breathing. This often leads to those affected breathing through their mouths, snoring or sleeping less well. Your solution: a small, barely visible nasal dilator made of medical silicone. The product is inserted directly into the nostrils and gently expands them from the inside so that more air can flow through the nose – without any medication or nasal sprays. The idea arose from his own concern: engineer Ignasi Selga himself suffers from narrowed nostrils and has been using various aids for years to be able to breathe better. But many products are uncomfortable or visible from the outside. With VENTICROSS, the founding team has therefore developed an inconspicuous alternative. The founders are offering 15 percent of their company shares for 50,000 euros for their nasal dilators. Is the small product convincing across the board or will the air become thin for the founding trio in the end?

Boller Battle from Hamburg
The lions are not only competitive when it comes to deals, but also at the gaming table: with Boller Battle, the cave quickly becomes a competitive arena. The founders Philip and Caroline Kirchhof present a mobile game show on wheels that reinvents the classic handcart tour. Their concept: a converted handcart, equipped with a cooling station, pull-out play counter and various mini-games that groups can play against each other on the go. Whether it’s a bachelor party, birthday or team event – on a three-hour tour up to twelve or more people compete against each other in different games. From quizzes to games of skill, the walk becomes an interactive competition. In the cave it’s not just theory: the investors have to do it themselves and engage in a surprisingly ambitious duel. It quickly becomes clear: the lions are highly competitive even outside of million-dollar deals. The founding couple’s business model is divided into two parts: in the cities of Hamburg and Essen they sell Boller Battle themselves, while in other cities they rely on a licensing system. Partners take over the operation on site and pay a fee per use. The concept is already growing across several locations. “We turn a simple handcart tour into a real experience – with competition, fun and team spirit,” says Philip Kirchhof. The lions had a lot of fun, but is Boller Battle also convincing as an investment case? They are offering 15 percent of their company shares for 200,000 euros.
