Hand on heart: Nobody wants to stand in the kitchen for long in the morning to get the wow effect. So now comes our really quick idea with which you can create a wonderful ambience on the breakfast table on St. Nicholas morning in no time. And you don’t even need more than 2 (yes, TWO!) ingredients. We were inspired on social media and thought we didn’t want to keep it from you. So here come heavenly angels and Santa Claus boots made of pretzel sticks for you.
The idea is really as simple as it is brilliant. You simply take normal pretzel sticks from the frozen department and with a clever cutting and laying technique you have Christmas motifs on the table in no time. The body or boots of angel and Santa Claus remain savory as usual, but the head or fur collar is sweet with hail sugar. If you don’t have to think about wake-up men or mare guys, it’s your own fault. The Christmas pretzel sticks are made much quicker.
The ingredients: Less is more
For this recipe, which is actually more of a guide, you don’t need a long shopping list. The magic lies in the cutting and laying technique.
We used 8 frozen pretzel sticks for one tray. I think this is the classic filling quantity for frozen pretzel sticks. But you can also only take out the amount you need for breakfast at home. But you need a whole pretzel stick per figure.
The granulated sugar, you probably know it from a yeast plait, is what makes the shape stand out a little later. The angel’s head, a lye ball, is rolled in granulated sugar, and the Santa’s boot has a small disc for the fur that sticks out.
Well, there are simply no more ingredients.
The 5 secrets of the perfect pretzel figures
So that your angels don’t fly away and the boots keep their shape, here are our tips for success.
- The perfect thawing moment: The rods must be able to be bent but must not stick to your fingers. Are they too soft? Just back in the freezer!
- Cutting technique: Use a sharp knife or even kitchen scissors/pizza cutter for clean edges.
- Glue trick: When you attach pieces of dough (like the “sugar head”), press them firmly and moisten the contact area minimally with water.
- Leave space: Pretzel pastry rises properly in the oven – give the figures enough room to “grow”.
- The contrast: Sprinkle the not Be sure to add the included pretzel salt to the sugared parts. This sweet and salty mix is irresistible!
What makes our recipe special
Why we love these lye hacks so much? Because they put a smile on everyone’s face. It’s not just a recipe, it’s a little craft lesson (without leftover glue!).
The taste of pretzel sticks is of course the same, but the shape is simply sweet. Especially on holidays like Christmas and St. Nicholas, it’s always nice when you realize that it’s a special day. And the cutting work is absolutely limited.
Step-by-step: The cutting and laying technique
This is where the magic comes into play. Here’s how to turn the poles into Christmas works of art:
Preparation
Preheat the oven to 200 °C top/bottom heat (or according to the package instructions). Line a baking sheet with baking paper. Let the 8 pretzel sticks thaw for approx. 15-20 minutes.
- Form the Santa boot
- Cut: Take the pretzel stick and cut it diagonally in the middle.
- fur: Cut a slice from one of the two halves and put it aside; this will become the fur trim.
- shapes: Now take the smaller section of lye and turn it over so that you can place it at a right angle to the other one. Connect both sections by pressing the dough together a little at the interface.
- Shoe heel: If you really want your Santa boot to be a boot and not just a Christmas sock, cut a small triangle out of the “sole”.
- fur: Roll the cut slice in granulated sugar and place it on top of the boot shaft.
- Forming the angel
- Cut: Cut the pretzel stick in half once. Cut a small slice off one side. Now you have to cut both rods diagonally again. Now it’s time to be careful.
- Place: You take two cut triangles (not the pieces with the round corner), turn them on their backs and make a diamond (kite shape) out of them. Cut surface to cut surface. You press these together at the seam.
- Shape wings: The round tips now become wings. You place these on the tip of the diamond and bend the tapered ends upwards.
- Shape angel head: Form the disk into a ball, roll it in granulated sugar and place it on top between the wings.
