One Piece Chapter 1188 Delivers a Spectacular Fight with a Shocking Ending

Rarely has a break week felt so painfully long, with One Piece Chapter 1188, “Void” concluding on the hottest cliffhanger since perhaps the pre-timeskip era. While fans have to wait two entire weeks to see the aftermath, this installment contains enough to dissect and analyze in great detail.

Luffy, empowered by recently consumed food and furious at Imu’s treatment of his friends, challenged the villain with a glorious punch in Chapter 1186. It seemed as though 1187 was setting up their battle, almost painting the two combatants as equals. Unfortunately for the hero, Imu needs just a single chapter to decimate him, resulting in the wall-to-wall action that elevates Chapter 1188 into one of the most exciting installments of One Piece.

One Piece Chapter 1188 Confirms Imu’s Superiority Over Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy is the man who will become the Pirate King, or so he has been saying for decades of One Piece. He devoured the fabled Gum-Gum Fruit, a Mythical Zoan whose alleged sentience implies that it selected Luffy on purpose. As much as the hero doesn’t want to be called a hero, however, it’s clear that he’s the Warrior of Liberation reincarnated to save the world. Ultimately, it’s a combination of destiny and free will that propels Luffy toward the titular treasure.

Although Luffy’s consistent success across the Grand Line was peppered with failures, he always rose to the occasion. He needed multiple chances to defeat several opponents, inevitably winning thanks to the general shonen formula of perfectly timed transformations and the power of friendship. Then came Gear 5, a toon force of such unique power that Luffy has never lost a single fight since acquiring it. At worst, battles against immortal opponents like the Five Elders were forced into a draw.

But Chapter 1188 proved that Luffy’s self-appointed pinnacle was nowhere near enough to challenge Imu. Fans loved watching him run rubbery rings around Kaido, effortlessly toying with an Emperor of the Sea. It was just as funny when Luffy flattened Kizaru and Saturn, turning them into ragdolls for his childish delight. Dueling Imu featured none of that classic Gear 5 absurdism, even as Luffy bounced around the battlefield in all his Looney Tunes glory.

You don’t understand the word impossible — not because you’re naive, but because you genuinely never accepted that it applied to you. You charge into every situation with the full force of your personality, your body, and your heart, and somehow the universe rearranges itself to accommodate you. You don’t lead through command; you lead through being so completely, recklessly yourself that everyone around you becomes a better version of who they were. You eat too much, feel too loudly, and care too deeply. The world calls it recklessness. Your crew calls it home. 🍖

You have made exactly one promise and you have organised your entire existence around keeping it. Stoic to a fault, terrifying in combat, and somehow always facing the wrong direction — you are the immovable foundation that the whole crew leans against when everything else shakes. You don’t ask for recognition. You don’t need it. The work is its own reward. The sword is the path and the path is the sword. You will lose a thousand times before you reach the top, and you will get back up every single time. That is not stubbornness. That is who you are. ⚔️

You are sharper than anyone in the room and you know it — but you also know exactly when not to show it. Pragmatic, resourceful, and carrying more than you ever show on your face, you are the reason the ship reaches anywhere at all. Every route was planned by you. Every impossible weather reading, every near-catastrophe avoided — that was you. The world tried to take everything from you once, and you built something extraordinary out of the wreckage. You love the people you’ve chosen fiercely, quietly, and without much ceremony. The map isn’t finished. You’ll get there. 🗺️

You spent so long being hunted for what you know that you forgot — briefly, painfully — that you were also worth loving for who you are. You carry the weight of erased history in your memory and the quiet certainty of someone who has survived what should have been unsurvivable. Calm where others panic, perceptive where others miss everything, and in possession of a dark humour that still catches people off guard. You don’t trust easily, and when you do, it is the most complete and devastating loyalty imaginable. You want to know the truth. You deserve to live to read it. 📖

You have principles carved so deep they function like a skeleton — invisible, structural, and the thing holding everything else upright. You cook for people because food is love expressed at its most honest. You fight for the crew because protecting them is the most natural thing in the world. You are elegant, occasionally absurd, capable of extraordinary tenderness and absolutely terrifying combat in the same five-minute span. You came from darkness and chose light so deliberately and so completely that it became your defining act. The sea called and you answered. All Blue is out there. You’ll find it. 🍳

The villain avoided every hit aimed at him, confirming that Luffy’s earlier punch had taken him by surprise. Imu’s flawless defensive measures were followed by Omen attacks that inevitably found their target, using movements somehow even weirder than Gear 5, and turning the tables on Luffy by forcing him to become the punchline. Whatever little merriment that started this fight slowly evaporated, as the despotic King of the World coldly dismantled the euphoric freedom of the Sun God.

Eager to end the battle — perhaps due to the reason preventing Imu from extending his stay in the “Lower World” — Chapter 1188 culminated in a devastating panel. The villain spawned a weapon known as the “Void Blade,” whose manifestation withered the surrounding forest, and impaled the hero. While the harrowing imagery matched Crocodile’s hook piercing Luffy’s body during their first fight, this time was completely different because it shattered any perceptions of Gear 5’s invincibility.

Gear 5’s Latest Upgrade Made No Sense (or Difference)

When Luffy charged into the battlefield and smacked Imu in the face, the callbacks to punching Charlos were both amusing and encouraging. While Imu is clearly leagues above the weakest character in One Piece, he almost exactly mirrored Charlos’ pathetic reaction to genuine heroism. The message was clear: Luffy does not differentiate between his enemies, and anyone who hurts his friends falls into the same category.

Unfortunately, hype could only take him so far. Gear 5 remains magnificent, but it was useless against Imu. This is the same power that triumphed over Kaido, terrified the World Government, and hilariously brutalized the Gorosei, Admirals, as well as elite warriors with Awakened Devil Fruits. Before Imu arrived, Gear 5 was hailed as the latest benchmark of power. As such, fans have been waiting for an upgrade since Luffy’s heartbeat became the Drums of Liberation.

Chapter 1188 introduced Gum-Gum Majin, a Japanese word referring to supernatural entities, explaining the genie form that loosely resembles the product of the Puff-Puff Fruit. That said, compared to Charlotte Daifuku’s genie, itself a powerhouse capable of neutralizing Sanji, Luffy’s version arguably possesses vastly greater strength. But Imu wasn’t even paying attention when he casually blocked a Haki-infused Majin punch and countered it with an attack that instantly dispelled the genie.

Before it disappeared to reveal Luffy’s Gear 5, the Majin form interacted with Loki and Jinbe, offering a narrative connection to the remaining events simultaneously occuring on Elbaph. Brook has nearly succeeded in freeing Gunko from Ragnir’s melting ice block, with Imu asking if “it was ordained that yon ice be shattered,” referencing his intentions for Gunko (and her supposedly unique eye-based power). Aside from this little side story, Majin’s appearance made no sense.

Maybe the point was to show that even a potentially phenomenal Gear 5 upgrade was utterly meaningless before the King of the World, who harshly mocked Luffy’s weakness. Imu knows that his opponent is the reincarnation of Joy Boy, announcing as much multiple times after coming to Elbaph. To address his superiority over the current form of Gear 5, however, Imu declared that Luffy was too weak to be Joy Boy. It wasn’t a literal fact, just an assessment suggesting that Luffy has yet to achieve his true peak.

Could that mean Gear 6, if not now, then somewhere down the line? How can Luffy continue fighting? Is there anyone else on Elbaph capable of standing up to Imu? Will Zoro and Sanji lose their minds or transcend themselves after sensing Luffy’s current situation? Are the Giant children going to be kidnapped after multiple successful attempts to rescue them? The climactic event of Chapter 1188 is a severe blow to the heroes of One Piece, raising several questions but also leaving the door open for a long-awaited flashback.

Fan Theories Predict a Flashback from All the Joy Boy References

Chapter 1188 begins with a flashback, introducing Imu and Joy Boy to each other for the first time. The conversation is pretty straightforward, but the Joy Boy name-drops ramp up alongside the fight. Keen-eyed fans also noticed Imu’s hyperfocus on his Void Century counterpart throughout the Elbaph arc, expressing both eagerness and bitterness at facing Joy Boy. And considering the sizzling cliffhanger, the time is particularly ripe for a flashback right now.

If that’s not convincing enough, just before Chapter 1186 concluded with Luffy’s punch, Imu was launching into an explanation about the Void Century. Those who celebrated Luffy stopping the villain’s nostalgic recollection might be disappointed when Chapter 1189 returns with one. A flashback is the perfect tension-tightener because of the cliffhanger and Imu’s ironically insightful mockery, with all signs pointing to some of the most important historical revelations in One Piece.

Oda could also do a double backflip and change the focus to Zoro and Sanji, who have been set up against Killingham and Sommers. Killingham’s Dream-Manifesting power has generated a monster version of the mythical Rain God Zaza, arguably the source of a very real Devil Fruit that fans theorize for Monkey D. Dragon, Nefertari Vivi or Nami.

So many possibilities to explore, so little time before Imu reaches his still-unknown predetermined limits and exits Elbaph, possibly even ending the ongoing arc. And yet, Oda has always been able to weaponize anticipation.
