In contrast to other notebooks, Apple does not offer too many configuration options with the MacBook Neo: The most difficult question is probably the preferred color of the casing, after which buyers only have to choose between the model with a 256 and a 512 GB SSD. Apple is happy with an additional charge of one hundred euros for the 512 gigabyte version and then also equips the device with a Touch ID sensor. However, a larger internal SSD is not possible – at least in theory. In fact, a YouTuber managed to add 1 terabyte of memory to Apple’s latest MacBook. MacBook Neo: 256 gigabytes upgraded to 1 terabyte of storage
The YouTuber Dosdude1 has already made a name for himself with technical upgrades to a wide variety of devices. In his latest video he focuses on the MacBook Neo. The idea is basically simple: Dosdude1 takes the 1 terabyte NAND module that is built into the iPhone 16 Pro and inserts it into the notebook. He chose the iPhone 16 Pro because, like the MacBook Neo, it relies on the A18 Pro. However, the undertaking is complicated to carry out and can probably only be accomplished by very experienced hobbyists. First of all, the MacBook Neo must of course be disassembled. Then you have to remove the thermal foil in order to unsolder the existing NAND memory. Special devices are also required to solder the 1 terabyte module back in. By the way, the RAM cannot be expanded: it is an integral part of the SoC.
Lengthy and costly procedure
Dosdude1 uses another Mac to put the MacBook Neo into DFU mode after the conversion has been completed. In this way, he submits the necessary firmware for the NAND module. The procedure turns out to be successful: the laptop does its job without any problems and the storage capacity is actually one terabyte. Of course, such intervention will result in the loss of the guarantee. Dosdude1 also points out that the NAND module accounts for “a good 35 percent” of the price of a new MacBook Neo – which probably undermines the product’s purpose as an inexpensive entry into the Mac cosmos.
