With iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, Apple is adopting a function known from the Mac for iPhone and iPad, which in the best case scenario you never have to see. In the future, smartphones and tablets will also be able to start in an extended recovery mode, which provides several repair and diagnostic options directly on the device. Until now, a Mac or PC was required in many cases for deeper interventions – for example if a software update failed or a device no longer started normally. The innovation can currently be seen in the developer beta of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. Similar to Mac
The new mode is visually and functionally reminiscent of the start menu on current Macs with Apple Silicon. To do this, hold down the button when switching on until a progress bar appears under the Apple logo. Apple takes a similar approach on the iPhone and iPad. After switching off, when reactivating the device, press the side button until the same display appears. The device then does not boot to the normal interface as usual, but instead shows the new recovery screen.

Options in “Recovery Mode”
There are several options available there. Users can access the recovery wizard, initiate a software update, start a diagnostic mode or delete all content and settings. At the same time, the screen shows the battery level and the WLAN connection, and a button also allows the device to be restarted normally.
More independence
iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 help mobile devices become more independent without having to use a Mac or PC. Especially with beta versions, failed updates or boot loops, you can avoid some trouble – or eliminate it with simpler steps. However, the statement made at the beginning still stands, because most users should never find themselves in the situation of having to carry out such interventions.
