Easy Peasy Croissant Waffles

We love croissants. So deliciously buttery, crispy, and tasty! They are the highlight of every weekend breakfast. Who would have thought you could do so much more with them than just eat them with a little jam? Croissants can also be used to quickly and easily make delicious Easy Peasy Croissant Waffles – a combination of croissants and waffles, as the name quite obviously suggests. 😉 Who would have thought that this was even possible and that it was so quick to make?

When we first heard about Croffles, we knew right away that we had to try them sometime! Unfortunately, there was a small problem back then – we did not have a waffle iron at home. ;PA quite significant piece of equipment, if you want to make croffles at home, right?! Well… luckily that changed.

I don’t even know if we ever had a waffle iron in our family when I was younger. If we did, we did not make waffles very often, for sure. I really can’t remember ever being served waffles as a child. However, my memories of that time are a bit hazy – the Stone Age was such a long time ago…! ;P

Anyway. A little while ago, a small waffle iron found its way into our kitchen. By “small waffle iron”, I really mean a “small waffle iron”. It’s actually tiny. Not much bigger than my hand, and it can only bake one waffle at a time. But given the number of waffles we bake on average, that’s perfectly adequate. That might change if it keeps producing delicious treats like the Croffles here!

You can see the waffle iron in one of the pictures – we bought it at a supermarket for very little money and are really happy with it. We already have a lot of appliances in our kitchen, so it’s great that the waffle iron can basically disappear between a few bowls without taking up a lot of space. However, as already mentioned, you can only make one waffle at a time with it. Or one single cruffle. Not suitable, if you wanted to go into mass production… ;P

Well, that just shows that you can make this delicious dessert even with the smallest waffle iron. It might take a little longer to make enough for several people, but that’s fine. The croffles can be served cold. Speaking of preparation – it couldn’t be easier! Just take an unbaked croissant (frozen and thawed croissants work great here), throw it on the waffle iron and fry/bake it until it’s nice and brown and crispy. Once you’ve baked a few, all you have to do is decorating and refining them the way you like. Whipped cream, fruit or berries, Biscoff or chocolate spread – there are no limits to your imagination!

Croissant waffles have become a welcome treat on Sunday afternoons when we don’t have any cake at hand (and are too lazy to bake one). We always keep a few frozen croissant dough pieces in the freezer. This makes this delicious dessert even easier to prepare than real waffles, for which you would have to make some batter first. ;P

When strawberries are not in season, you can still make the dessert with frozen fruit. In general, you can make a simple crumble like that one with all kinds of fruits and berries. Just use whatever you have on hand and whatever is available. ;P

Tips & tricks for fantastic croffles

Frozen or fresh – both work! If you have time to make croissant dough yourself – go for it! Everyone else can use dough from the refrigerated section or ready-made croissants from the freezer. Frozen croissants just need to be thawed before hand.

Hot iron = happy Croffles. Preheat the waffle iron well and grease it lightly – even if it has a non-stick coating. This will give the croffles that perfect golden brown crust.

A layer of sugar for extra crunch. Sprinkle a little sugar on the dough piece before baking it in the waffle iron. The sugar will caramelize, making the croffles extra crunchy.

Fancy a change? You can top croffles with all sorts of add-ons – whipped cream, fruit, chocolate, and much more! Since croissants are not sweet from the start, croffles can also be made savory – top them with cream cheese, ham, or avocado, and you got yourself a hearty snack!

Warm or cold? Croffles are unbeatable straight from the waffle iron – crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. However, if you want to decorate them, it’s better to let them cool down a little. Cream or other toppings would melt away on hot croffles in no time. 😉

DIRECTIONS / PREPARATION

1. Place the frozen croissants on a baking sheet lined with baking mat* or similar, and let them thaw – this takes about 30-45 minutes, depending on the room temperature.

2. Preheat your waffle iron according to the instructions of the device. Place the thawed croissants in the waffle iron – depending on the size of the waffle iron, this can be one or more. Our waffle iron could deal with one only. ;P Bake the croffles for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are nice golden brown. Depending on your appliance, the baking time may vary slightly. Let the baked croffles cool down on a wire rack.

3. For the decoration, whip the heavy cream with the cream stiffener until stiff peaks form and fill it into a piping bag with a star nozzle. You can now top the croffles with some Biscoff spread, nougat cream, or compote/jam, if desired. Pipe on the whipped cream and decorate with cookies, chocolate granola, chopped chocolate, fresh berries, or other items to your liking. Place the croffles in the fridge until ready to serve.

Place the thawed croissant dough pieces in the waffle iron – depending on the size of the device, this can be just one dough piece or several. Our waffle iron can only do one thing. ;P Bake the croffles for about 3-4 minutes or until they are nice and golden brown. Depending on the device, the baking time can vary slightly. Let the baked croffles cool on a wire rack.

3. For decoration, whip the whipped cream until stiff and then fill it into a piping bag with a star nozzle. You can now spread the croffles with a little Biscoff spread, nougat cream or compote/jam as desired, then pipe the cream on and decorate as you wish with cookies, chocolate granola, chopped chocolate, fresh berries or similar.
