Anthropic has introduced a new feature for Claude Cowork: Record a Skill. Users can record themselves while working. Claude then learns a repeatable skill from it to complete tasks for you. Reactions range from enthusiasm to job worries.
Currently, users can hardly click as quickly as AI applications get new functions. Claude developer Anthropic recently announced a new function for its AI agent Claude Cowork via its official X account.
The new feature is called “Record a Skill”. People who have a Claude subscription can record their screen while working on a task and explain what they are doing using voice. Claude turns this into a skill that the AI agent can repeat later.
This means: In the future, users will only have to explain a specific process once. Claude Cowork learns every click, every input and evaluates the voice input in order to then repeat a skill as often as desired without the need for additional descriptions or prompts.
Record Skill with Claude: Available for Macs only
If you want to try out the function yourself, you currently need a Mac. According to the official Claude help section, the recording feature is currently only available in Cowork in the Claude app for Mac, not in regular chat and not on Windows.
Users also need at least a Pro subscription. Free plan and Enterprise users do not currently have access.
Record a skill with Claude Cowork
Before recording:
Before you begin, make sure the Claude app on your Mac is up to date. The first time you record, macOS asks for two permissions: accessibility for mouse and keyboard capture and screen capture for visual capture. Claude may need to be restarted afterwards.
Important: Anthropic recommends closing any files, programs or conversations that you do not want to record beforehand. Additionally, no passwords or other sensitive information should be entered or visible during recording. During the entire recording period, everything on the screen as well as everything spoken is captured.
This is how the recording works:
- Open Cowork in the Claude app for Mac.
- Start recording in one of two ways: either go through the Plus symbol in the composer and the selection “Record skill“. Alternatively, click on ” in the sidebarAdjust“, then “Skills“, then “Add” and “Record screen“.
- On “Start recording” Click. Leave the microphone on if you want to comment on your steps out loud. This gives Claude context about your workflow.
- Now complete the task as usual. Meanwhile, a display bar shows you that the recording is in progress and counts the steps that have already been recorded.
- Click on “Ready” when you have completed your task. Select “Discard“if you are dissatisfied with the recording.
A single recording can last up to about ten minutes. A countdown display appears in the recording bar about a minute before expiration. If the time runs out, the recording ends automatically and everything recorded up to that point is sent to Claude, just as if you had clicked “Done” yourself.
After recording, Claude starts a cowork task, reviews the recording and suggests a skill. If it is a completely new skill, it will be marked “New” on the suggestion card. Saved skills then appear under “Customize” and “Skills” and can be edited, shared or deleted like any other skill.

Anthropic states that it does not preserve video and audio from a recording. After the recording is sent to Claude, Claude reviews the recording to create the skill.
“What is saved afterward is a series of screenshots from the session, which you can view by expanding the Recorded Demonstration step in the task,” the support article says.
Claude Cowork is not the first AI with this function
Currently, Record a Skill is only available to users of Claude’s Pro, Max, and Team plans. Anyone using the free plan or Enterprise does not have access. The function is currently only available in Cowork in the Claude app for Mac. A rollout for other platforms has not been officially announced at the moment.
Anthropic is not the first AI company to offer such a feature. OpenAI’s Codex has had a comparable function called “Record and Replay” since June 18, 2026. So far, only Mac users have access to it. In addition, the function cannot be used in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and Great Britain.
Between enthusiasm and concern for your own job
X users reacted to the announcement with mixed feelings. Some expressed concern that a function like this would make it particularly easy for companies to save jobs because work steps can now be filmed and automated directly by the person carrying out them.
Other users mainly complained that their usage limits had already been reached and that they had therefore not been able to try out the new function yet.
As with all previous innovations, it is impossible to predict whether Record a Skill will ultimately actually cost jobs or primarily save time.
