I love city trips! Whether it’s Barcelona, Rome or Naples – for me it’s the perfect mix of sightseeing, culinary delights and spontaneous adventures. But I’ve also experienced trips where a lot of things went wrong: wrong travel time, overcrowded sights or accommodation that looked completely different in the pictures.
That’s why I have mine here Tips for the perfect city trip summarized. With these tricks you will save time and nerves and make the most of your short vacation in Europe.

This is what you need to consider: the perfect city trip in Europe
5 tips for an unforgettable weekend in Venice
1. Choose the right travel time
The travel time decides the whole experience.
- High season: Busy, long lines, higher prices. But also the best weather and a full selection of restaurants.
- Low season: Fewer tourists, cheaper flights and hotels. It may happen that some sights or restaurants are closed.
My tip:
- For southern European cities like Lisbon or Naples, spring or autumn is ideal: warm but not crowded.
- Summer is worth it for northern European cities like Copenhagen or Amsterdam because the days are longer.

2. Planning: How many days are perfect?
City trips can become stressful if you pack too much into too little time.
- 3 days are enough for a city with few sights or if you just want to get a first impression.
- 4-5 days are perfect for sightseeing in a relaxed manner, drinking a coffee in peace and also incorporating spontaneous excursions.
Example:
I stayed in Naples for four nights – it was just right to see the old town, Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius without being rushed.

3. Arrival & Transport
Flights:
- Price comparison is worthwhile: Skyscanner or Google Flights often show the cheapest days.
- Flights are often cheaper during the week than on the weekend.
Train & Bus:
- There are often good train connections in Europe. Book early = save!
- Reserve airport transfers in advance, e.g. B. Shuttle bus or train ticket so as not to waste time on site.
Public transport:
- Some cities even offer free city center buses.
- Find out in advance whether there are day or weekly tickets.

4. Book tickets for attractions in advance
Nothing is more frustrating than queuing for hours at an attraction.
- Barcelona: Park Güell, Sagrada Família
- Milan: The Last Supper
- Paris: Catacombs, Louvre
Tip: Many cities offer City Cards that cover multiple attractions and local transportation.

5. Find the perfect accommodation
Airbnb, hotel or hostel? This depends on your budget and preferences:
- Airbnb: More personal, often with kitchen access and more contact with locals.
- Hotels: More comfort, often central location, sometimes breakfast included.
- Hostels: Perfect for solo travelers or those on a budget, often with shared kitchens.
My checklist:
- Note extras such as breakfast, WiFi, elevator
- Read reviews on multiple portals
- Research the neighborhood beforehand: Are you sure? Quiet? Central?

6. Insider tips instead of tourist traps
The best restaurants, bars and spots are rarely found in the travel guide.
- Locals ask: Airbnb hosts, taxi drivers or waiters often have the best tips.
- Social Media: TikTok & Instagram are great for current food and insider tips.
- Food tours or visit street food markets: cheap and authentic.
7. Budget tips for city trips
- Book early: The earlier flights and hotels, the cheaper.
- City Cards benefit: Combination of attractions and transport saves money.
- Picnic instead of restaurant: Use supermarkets or markets for snacks & breakfast.
8. Packing list for the city trip
- Comfortable shoes (you’ll be walking a lot!)
- Power bank for cell phone & camera
- Refillable water bottle
- Adapter if necessary
- Small pocket for valuables

9. Safety & Health
- Take out travel health insurance for trips abroad
- Save emergency numbers
- Save important documents (ID, insurance card) digitally
10. My conclusion: The perfect city trip
A good city trip is the mix of Planning and spontaneity. With the right preparations, you can avoid stress and have more time to really enjoy the city.
Whether Rome, Prague or Naples – each city has its own atmosphere. Plan the basics in advance, but also let yourself go, then your short vacation will be unforgettable.
