4 One Piece Villains Better Than Blackbeard

One Piece has so many characters that weaker personalities tend to fade into the background, even if they are relevant to the ongoing narrative. Meanwhile, Blackbeard has retained his importance despite conducting the vast majority of his operations in the shadows. Oda has been setting him up for something major down the line, and fans can’t wait to see how Blackbeard is going to affect Luffy’s goals.

Even with the recent revelation of Marshall D. Teach’s ancestry, Blackbeard was confirmed to be Rocks D. Xebec’s son — there are a few One Piece villains who feel more rounded and fleshed-out than a character whose true motivations are still unclear. These individuals may not have an ultimately bigger narrative role to play than Blackbeard, but they’re certainly better antagonists.

Enel Might Become Relevant to One Piece Soon Enough

Enel towered over Skypiea like a twisted tyrant, claiming himself divine simply because he possessed one of the strongest Devil Fruits in the world. Armed with the Lightning-Lightning Fruit, Enel produces so much raw power that few can even dream of standing against him. In fact, the only reason that Luffy managed to defeat him was because his rubber body was naturally immune to electricity.

Since leaving the Blue Planet for his precious Fairy Vearth, more commonly known as the Moon, Enel has been involved in some genuinely shady activities. His adventures are only available in the form of cover stories — “Enel’s Great Space Operations” — which highlight an ancient lunar civilization that seems deeply connected to the Blue Planet’s techno-historical past. And he has already established a base on the Moon, along with an army of robots to serve him.

As One Piece‘s Final Saga begins exposing the truths of the Void Century and the Ancient Weapons, Enel’s off-panel discoveries seem considerably more important than ever before. There’s been fan discussions of Enel Awakening his Devil Fruit to gain incomprehensible power, an event that’s bound to make massive waves across the Grand Line. Blackbeard may be more interesting than Enel, but it’s the latter’s mystique and potential answers to longtime questions that could end up having a greater impact on the story’s overarching mythology.

Big Mom Remains a Complicated Semi-Tragic Villain

Compared to One Piece villains like Kaido, Blackbeard or even Buggy, Big Mom’s greatest wish has always been to create a better world. Ever since she was abandoned on Elbaph by her parents, Charlotte Linlin has imagined a society where prejudice simply does not exist. It was this dream that led to the formation of Totto Land, a nation where every race could live together as equals, cementing Big Mom’s vision as noble and heroic.

Unfortunately, she continues to corrupt her ambitions through her own selfishness and instability. Instead of fostering tolerance and developing harmony, Big Mom attempts to enforce unity via fear and control. Her heartbreaking backstory confirmed that she was once innocent, a strange yet sympathetic version of the character that also appears when he loses her memories in Wano Country.

It feels as though Big Mom can yet be redeemed, even if the process isn’t going to be easy. Her childish inability to process grief and rejection, combined with her monumental strength, can turn the smallest disappointments into earth-shattering catastrophes. The tragedy of her arc is that she never truly comprehends why others fear her, revealing glimpses of the lonely child who has never stopped wanting to belong. And with One Piece presently heading through Elbaph, perhaps its time for Big Mom to return once again.

Donquixote Doflamingo Represents the Ironies of the World Government

Few villains embody the central themes of One Piece better than Donquixote Doflamingo, whose surface-level obsession with power and manipulation is derived from his recognition of the systemic hypocrisies fundamental to the World Government. He knows, perhaps too painfully, that the entire institution is founded on violence, corruption, and selective justice. The difference, however, is that Doflamingo gleefully accepts and embraces these truths with a greater ferocity than Blackbeard.

The fact that he refuses to disguise his motivations emphasizes the ironies undergirding the World Government. Doflamingo was once a Celestial Dragon before his father’s ill-considered decision to leave Mary Geoise and take up residence in the North Blue. Having endured the horrible fate meted out to his family for simply being World Nobles, Doflamingo aimed to remake the Donquixote name on his own merits.

These experiences essentially convinced him that concepts like morality and justice are nothing more than tools wielded by those with the power to do so, transforming Doflamingo into a living indictment of the system that created him. And this worldview, no matter how egregious it sounds, isn’t easy to dismiss. Regardless of Doflamingo’s undeniable villainy, many of his takes on hierarchy, power, and human nature have been proven right throughout One Piece.

Imu Changed History Itself During the Void Century

Despite having a fraction of the screentime enjoyed by numerous other antagonists, Imu has become one of the most fascinating One Piece villains. The mere mystery surrounding the ruler of the world elevates every appearance into a major event. While Blackbeard continues to seek power for ambiguous reasons, it seems like Imu already possesses it. The first scenes of Imu fighting happened during the Levely, but the Elbaph arc transformed the shadowy sovereign from a distant threat into the most terrifying character in the manga.

The ongoing chapters of One Piece have showcased some of Imu’s combat prowess, allowing him to defeat Zoro and Sanji with a single strike each. Even Loki, whose mythical Zoan Devil Fruit and living hammer Ragnir make him effectively invincible, is finding it difficult to defeat Imu. Luffy’s on his way to the battlefield, though the ensuing battle is unlikely to last very long.

All things considered, it’s not Imu’s power that makes him a compelling character. Anime villains are usually broken for scaling reasons, but they may not always be worth examining in detail. By contrast, Imu’s relationships with Joy Boy, the Void Century and the Ancient Kingdom are narratively critical. Even if Blackbeard turns out to be One Piece‘s final boss, Imu will remain the true architect of the story’s world.
