WTTC Backs ICAO’s Next-Gen PKD to Transform Global Travel Security

The World Travel & Tourism Council welcomes ICAO’s next-generation Public Key Directory, a breakthrough in secure digital travel. The system enables real-time credential verification, faster border processing, and biometric integration—enhancing both security and traveler experience while supporting the continued growth of global tourism.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has welcomed the launch of the next-generation Public Key Directory (PKD) by the IInternational Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), calling it a major step towards a more secure and seamless global travel ecosystem.

WTTC, which has consistently advocated for smarter and more efficient border systems, highlighted the importance of digital innovation in meeting the demands of a rapidly expanding travel sector. The Better Borders report projects that Travel & Tourism will contribute $16.5 trillion to global GDP by 2035, representing 12.5% of the world’s workforce. The report also estimates that enhanced border management could unlock an additional $401 billion in GDP and generate 14 million new jobs across G20, EU, and African Union countries.

As international travel continues to rebound and grow, balancing security with efficiency has become increasingly critical. ICAO’s upgraded PKD system enables real-time verification of digital travel credentials, allowing governments, airlines, and airports to authenticate documents instantly while improving the passenger experience.

The system introduces several key advancements, including faster border processing, remote document authentication, and compatibility with verified biometric technologies. These features are expected to significantly reduce friction at borders while maintaining high security standards.

Commenting on the development, Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of WTTC, said the initiative represents a pivotal moment for the industry:

“ICAO’s next-generation Public Key Directory is a transformative step towards the future of global travel. By enabling secure, real-time verification of digital travel credentials, this initiative strengthens both security and facilitation at borders. At WTTC, we fully endorse this advancement, which aligns with our vision for a seamless, traveler-centric journey and supports the continued growth and resilience of the Travel & Tourism sector.”

WTTC emphasizes that initiatives like ICAO’s PKD demonstrate how digital transformation can simultaneously enhance border security and improve traveler experiences. As the sector moves towards a more connected, technology-driven future, such innovations are expected to play a central role in building a resilient, future-ready global travel landscape.
