When seniors fall: Startup receives 8.5 million euros for its emergency call idea

Michael Hummels (CTO, left) and Marlon Visit (CEO, right) have developed a mobile emergency call system that is tailored to the needs of seniors.

The Soest healthtech startup Gardia is securing fresh capital – and is targeting a future market worth billions: security in old age.

As the startup announces, they have completed Series A financing for 8.5 million euros. The round is led by European venture capital investor Peak; Amberra, Butterfly & Elephant and existing investors such as Bonventure, Dieter von Holtzbrinck Ventures (DvH Ventures), Beurer and several business angels are also involved.

Emergency call without a smartphone

The founders of the startup are Michael Hummels (CTO) and Marlon Visit (CEO). They founded Microsynetics GmbH in 2019. Because they themselves experienced in their families that people in old age could benefit from an emergency call solution, they developed their mobile emergency call system under the Gardia brand.

Because: Every year, around 5.7 million falls occur in seniors over 65, according to the startup’s statement. Many of those affected are unable to get up on their own or call for help after a fall. This in turn increases the risk of serious consequential damage and the need for care.

Existing emergency call systems are not used in everyday life because they have a stigmatizing effect or are too complicated.

The founders’ solution: An emergency call bracelet with automatic fall detection that works without a smartphone and can be used both at home and on the go – and that people like to wear. “Reliable fall detection requires technologically highly complex and precise development,” says Marlon Visit. “At the same time, we see that many existing emergency call systems are not used in everyday life because they have a stigmatizing effect or are too complicated.”

With the fresh capital, Gardia plans to grow in the DACH region, expand internationally and expand cooperation in the care and health sector. A partnership with Bosch is intended to ensure 24/7 emergency call support. At the same time, the founders are working on the next generation of the emergency call system.
