Sometimes you only realize how badly you needed a break when you finally get somewhere and can breathe deeply again for the first time. That’s exactly how it was with me Juist. I’ve wanted to travel with my dog Benzina for a long time, just get out, to the sea, away from everyday life, away from functioning.
Flying was not an option for us. My dog is too big for the cabin, and I didn’t feel like the stress at the airport or the feeling that the journey was more strenuous than the vacation itself. That’s why it quickly became clear to me: If we leave, we’ll take the train.

Why Juist of all people?
The East Frisian Islands have long had a special place in my heart. I was there in 2013 and still remember how much I loved this mix of peace, tea, wind, dunes and these special houses. There are places that immediately trigger something in you, even though you can’t really explain them. For me, Juist is exactly that.
What I like about Juist is this completely unique feeling. The island doesn’t just look beautiful, it also feels different. Decelerated, quieter, lighter. You get there and notice pretty quickly that the rhythm is suddenly different.
In addition: Juist is surprisingly easy to get to from Berlin. For me, traveling by train via Hanover was ideal. And then of course perhaps the biggest plus point of all: Juist is car-free. That makes an incredible difference on the island. No streets full of traffic, no constant engine noise, no hectic search for a parking space. Instead, a lot of things are done on foot, by bike or in carriages. That alone immediately changes the mood and makes Juist such a good destination if you really want to unwind.
Stay overnight at the Hotel Atlantic Juist: central, relaxed and dog-friendly
I stayed overnight in Hotel Atlantic Juist. This was a really good choice for this trip! Especially when you travel with a dog, you quickly notice whether a hotel simply allows pets or whether it really has been taken into account. Here I had more of the latter feeling.
The location is extremely practical. The hotel is located right in the center on the Kurplatz, close to the Wadden Sea and the beach and it is also only a short walk from the harbor and ferry. This is worth its weight in gold, especially after a longer journey.
My room had a small kitchen, which I thought was great. For me, something like this immediately makes a stay more relaxing. And it was really well prepared for the dog: bowls and a blanket were already ready. The fact that the hotel officially addresses dogs very consciously is evident from the fact that it even has its own offer for traveling with dogs.
I also really liked the small wellness area here. The hotel has an indoor pool, as well as a sauna and steam room. Especially at the end of February, when it’s rough outside and you want to warm up after a long walk, this is pretty perfect.
Another point that I really loved: the breakfast. And not just because it was delicious, but also because it lasts until 12 p.m. I find Late riser breakfast on vacation simply unbeatable.
There was also coffee and cake every day, which I also really liked. Something like this makes a hotel more comfortable. Plus this little bar for the evening if you want to have a drink after a long walk.
Vacation on Juist with a dog: Why the island is so good for this
I think Juist is generally a pretty good destination if you want to travel with a dog. Not just because of the peace and quiet, but because a lot of things there automatically seem more dog-friendly than in other holiday destinations. You’re outside a lot, you’re on the move a lot, you have nature all around you and you don’t have to constantly think about how to organize your day in the most complicated way possible.
Here you will find two different dog beaches and also a very nice dog exercise area with a view of the sea. Because of the nature reserve, dogs must be kept on a leash almost everywhere.
What can you do on Juist?
I was there at the end of February, in the low season. Of course, this means that some things were still closed or not yet offered. If you travel outside of the classic holiday times, you have to be prepared for the island to be a little quieter. But that didn’t bother me at all.
In summer, for example, trips to the seal beds are possible. They are officially offered on Juist and are certainly one of the things that are good to look at in the warmer season.
Hike towards Hammersee
One of our tours went towards Hammerseeand that was exactly my thing. Just get out, run, wind in your face, stop now and then, marvel, keep going. The Hammersee is located just outside the town center and is easily accessible on foot. It’s about a 4-5 kilometer walk.
I always find paths like this particularly nice when there isn’t something going on all the time. Especially in the off-season, the whole thing had something almost meditative about it. Lots of sky, lots of air, little distraction. That’s exactly what I needed.
Dog exercise area with sea views
That was also a real highlight for me Dog run area. I really liked that one. If you travel with a dog, places like this are worth their weight in gold because the dog can walk there in a completely different way than during a normal walk on a leash.
The dog run area is outside the town towards the airport. You can reach it via a small path when you leave the town near the haulage company.
For us it was a great point on the island because my dog had a lot of fun there and at the same time I thought the view of the sea was simply beautiful.
My big tip on Juist: Otto Leege path
If I would really recommend something on Juist, it would be the Otto Leege Trail. That was one of the most beautiful experiences there for me. And also a place that is more than just a walking path.
The path leads from the salt marshes over the dunes to the beach and combines nature with small stations, information and art. It is not just a path from A to B, but something that you consciously experience.
Food on Juist: still a good selection even in the off-season
For me, food is never just an afterthought on vacation. I don’t have to go out for a fancy meal every evening, but I want to find beautiful places, try delicious things and treat myself to small, fixed rituals. Things were still going well on Juist at the end of February, although there are of course fewer openings in the off-season.
They were a must for me Raisin mares in the Remmers bakery. Remmers is pretty well known for this on Juist. The bakery is located in Westdorf on Billstrasse, about 400 meters from Kurplatz.
Also, I was in the Kitchen workshop eat, which I can also recommend. The restaurant is located in the middle of the Kurplatz and is described on Juist as a place that wants to offer a suitable experience at any time of day.
Also Baumanns I thought it was good, a café right on the Kurplatz, and at Snack Frankies I also went for a fish sandwich. Of course, especially in the off-season, it’s helpful to take a quick look at what’s open beforehand. But I still found the selection completely okay.
I also found it practical that there is not a complete lack of everyday things on Juist. There is Rossmann and two supermarkets, which I find really pleasant, especially when staying with a dog. This means you don’t have to rely entirely on going to a restaurant and you can still get things spontaneously.
My conclusion: A holiday on Juist with a dog is a real recommendation
For me, this short trip was exactly what I needed. A break that wasn’t complicated. A journey that felt right on the way there. And a place that is perfect for a break with your dog. The only downside: Benzina was a bit afraid of the carriages on the island.
Juist showed me again how good the North Sea is for me. This mixture of wind, space, peace and nature simply works for me every time. Plus the relaxed journey by train, the car-free island, the dog-friendly hotel, long walks towards Hammersee, the great dog run and the Otto Leege path as a real highlight. Perfect for a weekend trip!
A Holiday on Juist with your dog really worth it. Especially for a weekend or a few days in between, this is a really nice way to get out without the trip itself being stressful again.
