What’s new in the browser
The Safari browser uses the same counter as the operating system, but uses a much more complex counting form as the internal version number. Since the program and the underlying WebKit engine are central to Apple’s operating systems, there is a separate document with release notes. There are a lot of fixed problems here, but also some new features:
- Support for the CSS pseudo-class “:open” on certain elements
- New CSS keyword “element-scoped” for “random()”
- Support for color-interpolation attribute in SVG gradients
- ToggleEvent in the Web API now supports the “source” property
- Origin API support
Kernel extensions and frameworks
As expected, there are many smaller changes to the system internals. A few changes particularly caught Howard Oakley’s eye: The Apple Silicon firmware (mBoot) now has version number 18000.120.36. The APFS file system has a new version number (2811.120.14), smbfs has also been updated (to 6.0.1), and there have been significant changes to AppleUSBAudio and the graphics drivers (AGX kernel extensions). On top of that, Apple introduced a new private framework: “AppleAccountTransparency” appears for the first time in macOS 26.5.
