Union Square Ventures
+++ InvestorsToWatch! Investments from Union Square Ventures (UPS) in Germany are rare. With alqem is now – as far as we could count – only the eighth German startup to end up in the portfolio of the legendary New York financier. DeepTech from Garching near Munich, founded in 2026, is developing an AI platform that is intended to accelerate the development and commercialization of new materials. Previous USV investments in this country include: Auxmoney, Clue, Marley Spoon, OneFootball, Eastern Rome, SimScale and SoundCloud. The billionaire investor USV invested early on in companies such as: Twitter, Stripe, Coinbase, Cloudflare, Etsy and Duolingo. A place in USV’s portfolio is still a real exception for German startups. More about Union Square Ventures
Schüttflix
+++ Layoffs! The Gütersloh construction logistics startup Schüttflix will be separating from around 18% of its workforce by the end of the year – as reported by Neue Westfälische, among others. Administrative and management positions are particularly affected. Most recently, around 360 employees worked for the “digital platform for the supply and disposal of the construction site”. The company justifies the tough step with a “strategic restructuring”. In the future, the team would like to concentrate more on its core operational business and the expansion of its own recycling facilities. Schüttflix, founded in 2018, has already raised more than 140 million euros in venture capital in recent years. In 2024, Grownup generated sales of 138 million euros (previous year: 126 million), the annual deficit was 18.9 million euros (previous year: 23.5 million). The digital recycling scene is currently under great pressure. The Graz recycling scaleup Metaloop recently even slipped into bankruptcy. The Hamburg recycling startup was also previously Cirplus liquidated. (Neue Westfälische, WiWo) More about Schüttflix
Oyster Bay Venture capital
+++ Rise! The Berlin FoodTech investor Oyster Bay Venture Capital promoted Philip Stark to the partner. In recent years, Stark has played a key role in building up the investor, which is now worth more than 100 million euros, and, among other things, accompanied the second fund and the investor’s first exit. Oyster Bay invests in FoodTech and AgTech startups across Europe. In recent years, the lender has already invested in companies such as Air Up, GoodBytz, Stenon, Dropz, Hooked and Nucoco. Cologne
+++ After the record year 2025 remains Cologne on startup course. The number of new businesses increased significantly again in the first half of the year. When it comes to financing, however, the picture is different: the number and volume of financing rounds are clearly below the previous year’s level. More about the startup scene in Cologne
