Uber founder Travis Kalanick has raised $1.7 billion for his robotics company Atoms. The financing round is led by Andreessen Horowitz, partner Ben Horowitz also joins the board of directors. Bain Capital, Fifth Wall and Uber (surprise!) are also participating in the round.

Atoms is the evolution of Kalanick’s previous company, CloudKitchens. In March he renamed the holding company and at the same time took over the automation company Pronto from his former Uber colleague Anthony Levandowski.

With Atoms, Kalanick wants to develop robotics and AI for industry. His goal: to create a kind of “chassis for robots” and make industries such as production, logistics and mining more efficient. Kalanick sees Atoms as a continuation of his vision of automating the physical world with software, similar to how Uber transformed transportation.
