A refresh rate of 120 Hertz may be considered good practice even on entry-level Android smartphones, but the situation is different on the iPhone: although all offshoots of the iPhone 17 and the Air support the feature, previously it was always only the Pro models that supported ProMotion. This exclusive distinguishing feature remains in other product categories: The iPad Pro and MacBook Pro have 120 Hertz panels, while the company’s other tablets and Macs do not. If you own a compatible device, you can “force” Safari to use the full refresh rate – as long as you know the well-hidden setting for this.

120 Hertz with Safari on the Mac
Anyone who scrolls through websites in Safari on a compatible device already benefits from playback in 120 Hertz. The situation is different with animations on websites, for example in web-based games: Safari always tries to keep the refresh rate at 60 Hertz. Other browsers usually do not have such a restriction. In order to activate the full 120 Hertz for Safari, you have to adjust the settings.

On Mac, do the following:

• Open Safari
• In the menu bar, click Safari > Settings
• Select the “Advanced” tab and check the bottom item: “Show features for web developers”
• You now get access to two more tabs, including “Feature Flags” – go to that section
• Type “60” into the search field and deactivate Select the “Prefer Page Rendering Updates near 60fps” option
• Restart Safari

This process is a little easier to accomplish on the iPhone and iPad:

• Go to Settings
• Tap “Apps” at the bottom of the list
• Select “Safari.”
• Tap on the bottom item “Advanced”
