The best small cars in 2026

Small cars are ideal for cities, short distances and singles. Thanks to their compact design and low maintenance costs, they are still popular with many buyers. In our weekly ranking we will therefore show you the ten best small cars in 2026.

The small car segment has diversified significantly in recent years. The selection ranges from classic three-door models to slightly more comfortable five-door models and models with an SUV look. The last point is no coincidence, as SUVs now dominate the market.

Nevertheless, compact cars have some advantages. In cities, drivers find it easier to find a parking space, and the maintenance costs are unbeatably low – especially if you choose an electric motor.

That’s what a small car will be in 2026

Many small cars now have features that were previously only found in expensive models, including assistance and infotainment systems. There are big differences, for example, in the amount of space in the rear behind the first row of seats (especially if a battery still takes up space) or the clarity at intersections.

The Whatcar portal has created a list of the best small cars currently on the market. However, for one of the top places a model has to offer more than a compact design. It is important to the experts that the vehicles are comfortable to drive at any speed, are easy to maneuver through city traffic and offer enough space for at least two people and a large purchase. Of course, the acquisition costs and reliability also play a role.

All of these aspects were taken into account in the ranking. In the following gallery we present the currently most attractive small cars.

10th place: Peugeot 208

The Peugeot 208 secures its place in the top ten thanks to its stylish design and high driving comfort. The 100 hp 1.2-liter gasoline engine is particularly praised. A small negative point is the fiddly infotainment system, which sometimes doesn’t have any physical buttons.
