One Piece’s Return Proves Its Remake Is Needed More Than Ever

The beloved One Piece anime recently returned with plenty of pleasant surprises, but one shocked viewers with a tease of what a modern One Piece anime could look like. Elbaph’s exciting arc finally began with episode #1056, and while it effectively progressed the epic’s narrative, it also included an emotional flashback from the distant past that looks better than ever.
Since 1999, Toei’s One Piece anime has been broadcasting a new episode of the show almost every week. However, the continued shift in how anime is produced has changed the industry drastically. Now, most series focus more on quality versus quantity, which was a change that the long-running anime struggled to maintain, hence the shift to a more seasonal release structure.
While Netflix has partnered with the talented WIT Studios (Spy x Family, Attack on Titan) to produce a completely fresh remake with The One Piece, Toei has beaten them to it and stunned viewers with a look at what early One Piece could look like with modern animation techniques in episode #1056.
Toei Remakes Little Garden Scenes Before WIT’s The One Piece Could

After what felt like an eternity for long-time viewers, Toei’s One Piece anime finally returned after its dramatic release schedule shift. Episode #1056 faithfully adapts the first stage of the Straw Hats’ journey to the land of the Giants, homeland of Elbaph. Surviving the events that took place on Egghead Island earned the Giants and the Straw Hats the right to feast and party, and it was then that Luffy and Usopp finally came to terms that they were finally on their way to Elbaph.
It has been a goal the two have had since meeting Dory and Broggy in Little Garden, which was adapted in episodes #70 – #77. In classic anime fashion, the newer episode included a flashback that focused on the emotional milestone that Usopp and Luffy are preparing to accomplish, but the flashback surprisingly did not use footage from the episodes that aired nearly twenty-five years ago.
Oda Has a Heart Breaking Reason For Approving One Piece’s Big Remake
Eiichiro Oda reveals the real reason behind his desire to have an entire One Piece anime remake, and it is one that every fan will agree with.
The Little Garden arc was very recently adapted in the fantastic One Piece Live-Action adaptation, but it was all the way back in 2001 that anime fans were introduced to the ferociously charming dueling Giants, Dory and Broggy. Now, in episode #1056, a flashback through Usopp’s perspective showcases what Little Garden would look like with modern animation, a goal that WIT hopes to accomplish whenever they release their remake The One Piece.
Does The World Really Need Two One Piece Anime?
Anime has come a long way in the past decade. Visuals have become more fluid and vibrant than most content that was released in the late 90s and 2000s, and the new footage of the Straw Hats’ adventure on Little Garden is a prime example. Episode #1056 shows off the two fan-favorite Giants clashing while Usopp stares in wonder. That moment, and when Dory and Brogy decimated the giant Goldfish to save the Going Merry, were completely reanimated because they were incredibly important in helping form Usopp’s dream of becoming a Brave Warrior of the Sea and visiting Elbaph.

Early One Piece episodes still hold up incredibly well, but Toei’s tease of modernized classic story beats is a reminder that they could look better thanks to new animation techniques. Still, Toei has had absolute control of the beloved franchise’s anime adaptations for decades, and seeing it through a new creative lens could be an incredibly refreshing experience for fans who are open to giving The One Piece a shot when it eventually releases on Netflix.
With the recent shift in production scheduling and Toei enlisting talented animators from around the world, the ongoing anime is sure to stun viewers and continue to break the internet as it did with Luffy versus Kaido and several Egghead moments. With the story reaching its anticipated conclusion, and the remake anime gearing up to attract a whole new generation, the One Piece franchise is gearing up for some very exciting times.
