One Piece’s Next Anime Makes Dragon Ball’s Look Like A Complete Joke
Ahmed Riaz
Dragon Ball and One Piece both have several huge anime releases on the way, but only one of the colossal fanbases is going to be happy about their next anime series. Both franchises have ranked among the most popular anime in the world, and they have each stayed that way for decades. But releases coming in the near future have the potential to change that.
It took the legendary Akira Toriyama almost eleven years to produce the Dragon Ball manga, which introduced Goku in its debut and ended with the defeat of Majin Buu. While the manga is iconic on its own right, it was the original anime and Dragon Ball Z that pushed the franchise and the anime medium’s popularity to unseen levels. Without Dragon Ball, anime wouldn’t be nearly as popular as it is today, and there wouldn’t be other beloved series like Naruto or One Piece.
One Piece, on the other hand, began publishing its manga in 1997 and is still going almost thirty years later. Author Eiichiro Oda has miraculously channeled the inspiration he gained from Toriyama to spawn an adventure epic that’s managed to captivate millions of fans and kept them engrossed even after more than 1179 chapters. One Piece‘s anime is also still ongoing and has gone through several evolutions since its 1999 debut. However, the franchise has an anime project coming soon that’ll likely make Dragon Ball fans jealous.

In 2023, it was announced that production had begun on an entirely new anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s epic from WIT STUDIOS, who previously made a name for themselves with series like Attack on Titan, Spy x Family, and Ranking of Kings. News regarding the fresh take on the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy has been scarce since its reveal, but like all remakes, it hopes to help introduce an entirely new generation of fans to the franchise. Something that Dragon Ball Super pulled off extremely well.

Goku
“I am the hope of the universe. I am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace.” You’re a pure-hearted warrior who lives for the thrill of the fight. Every challenge is an opportunity, every enemy a potential friend, and every defeat just fuel to come back stronger. People are drawn to your infectious optimism and unbreakable spirit, even when your naivety drives them crazy. You’d give your last Senzu Bean to a stranger and charge headfirst into a battle you can’t win — not because you’re reckless, but because you genuinely believe that pushing past your limits is the only way to grow. Like Goku, your greatest power isn’t your ki — it’s your ability to inspire everyone around you to be better.

👑
Vegeta
“I do not fear this new challenge. Rather like a true warrior, I will rise to meet it.” You carry yourself with the pride of royalty and the ferocity of a born warrior. Second place is not in your vocabulary, and you’d rather break your body than your spirit. People might call you arrogant, but beneath that iron exterior lies someone who has learned to fight not just for themselves, but for the people they’ve quietly grown to love. Your journey is one of evolution — from cold-blooded conqueror to Earth’s fiercest protector — and every scar you carry is proof that pride and love can coexist. Like Vegeta, you don’t just want to be the strongest — you need to earn it on your own terms.
Proud Relentless Fierce Evolving
🧘
Piccolo
“Sometimes, we have to look beyond what we want and do what’s best.” You’re the one everyone depends on when things fall apart — the calm center in the middle of chaos. While others charge in recklessly or let their ego do the talking, you see the bigger picture and make the hard calls that need making. You didn’t choose to care about people, but somewhere along the way it happened, and now you’d sacrifice everything for those you’ve taken under your wing. Stoic on the surface, deeply loyal underneath, you’re the mentor, the strategist, and the last line of defense all in one. Like Piccolo, your true strength is wisdom — and the courage to do what’s right even when no one is watching.

The Dragon Ball franchise was at a low point after Dragon Ball GT ended, and the live-action movie Dragonball Evolution flopped hard with both critics and fans. Because of the damage that movie left on the franchise, Akira Toriyama took it upon himself to repair its reputation, resulting in the birth of Dragon Ball Super. Everything changed with the release of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, and its introduction to Beerus, The God of Destruction. A character so important that Dragon Ball‘s anime producers think he needs three separate introductions.
Dragon Ball’s Next Anime Isn’t Just A Mistake, It’s A Complete Waste Of Toei’s Talent
Fans are hungry for the Dragon Ball Super anime to return, but those in charge of it have something else in mind that no one is asking for.
While the continuation of Dragon Ball Super has finally been announced with The Galactic Patrol adaptation, it will not be the next Dragon Ball anime fans will be seeing. In Fall 2026, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus will be remastering the anime’s first arc with considerable edits and new footage. The original Battle of Gods movie was stretched out into a rushed fifteen-episode anime arc that was filled with disappointing animation and other questionable decisions that provided a rocky launch for arguably one of anime history’s most anticipated projects.
Over time, Dragon Ball Super improved drastically, but its first couple of seasons were clearly not Toei’s (the company in charge of producing Dragon Ball anime) talents being used to full effect. With the upcoming remaster hoping to condense the arc into six focused episodes, it should help fix the series’ early mistakes, but a remaster of familiar and somewhat recent material is not what most Dragon Ball fans are hungry for. While One Piece fans are gearing up to eat very well.
Why One Piece’s Next Anime Will Outshine Dragon Ball’s Next Series
For decades, Toei Animation has been in charge of producing Dragon Ball, One Piece, and many other anime series. There are only so many productions one company can work on, and how Toei decides which to devote its resources to is a mystery. While they continue working on the ongoing One Piece anime, which has seen a huge increase in quality in the last few years, the remake project is instead being worked on by WIT STUDIOS, who may not be stretched as thin as Toei.
While Toei’s next Dragon Ball project is looking to remaster the Beerus arc, The One Piece project is going to be made with entirely new animation, voice acting, and maybe even some surprises. Unlike the upcoming Beerus project, the highly anticipated DBS: The Galactic Patrol adaptation will also likely contain incredible animation and several exciting bombshells that Dragon Ball anime fans will not want to miss. Still, when comparing One Piece and Dragon Ball‘s next projects, it’s difficult not to wonder why Luffy’s story is getting more care and attention than Goku’s.
One Piece’s Next Few Years Could Bring Unseen Levels of Hype
Custom Image by Merlyn De Souza
It’s difficult not to overstate how big the One Piece franchise has become and what its fans have ahead of them in the coming years. With the One Piece manga entering its final arc, the success of its Netflix live-action series, and the upcoming anime remake, One Piece is entering a level of hype few franchises ever reach, and when its manga and original anime do reach the ending, it will likely cause gahterings and celebrations worldwide, and a handful of spoilers that will be nearly impossible to avoid for those who are not caught up.
Without spoiling things for potential viewers, One Piece‘s final arcs are delivering payoff after payoff to mysteries and battles that have been carefully built up over decades of publication. And when it does finally reach its climax, it may surpass the levels of excitement that were felt when fans watched the final episodes of Dragon Ball Super‘s Tournament of Power, which brought thousands of people into the streets of cities around the globe.
Longtime Dragon Ball fans continue to hope that there will be another day in the near future when they can get together and witness their favorite characters accomplishing great things, like One Piece fans have been able to do with each of its new releases. Dragon Ball‘s next anime may not be able to do that, but with some patience, there will be more anime adventures with Goku and Vegeta to get excited about. In the meantime, fans should allow Toei to cook and possibly give other series a try because it may be a long wait.
