An album with a white background, such as the Beatles’ “White Album”, also provides the edge and the playlist with a white background and inverts the reduced brightness display of “Dark Mode”. This can come as a surprise, wake up someone sleeping next to you or cause discomfort, for example in people who are prone to migraines. The effect also works in the opposite direction – but a suddenly dark background with a generally bright display seems to bother fewer users.
Depending on the album color, the display of the playlist changes.
Remedy with “increase contrast”
Fortunately, an operating aid called “Increase Contrast” offers a relatively uncomplicated solution: If you switch it on, the track list returns to the color specified by the display mode. The area around the selected album cover occasionally remains in its predominant color – but now you can scroll down to minimize its brightness quite quickly.
With increased contrast, the effect of full screen mode is significantly reduced (middle screenshot taken in light mode).
Tip: Limit to music app
If the effect of this operating aid is welcome in the music app, but is generally too extreme, you can limit it to the music app:
- In the Settings app, scroll to the bottom of Accessibility.
- Tap “App-Specific Settings.”
- Select “Music” via “Add App”.
- In the app-specific settings, tap “Increase Contrast”.
- Switch from “Standard” to “On”.
In the accessibility features, some options can be limited to one app.
