MacBook Neo: Apple shocks with cheap laptop

Apple has launched its cheapest notebook to date with the MacBook Neo. The company is embarking on a new pricing strategy with the device that has shocked many competitors. Because with the Neo laptop, Apple seems to have achieved a small coup. There is criticism in the digital media, but it often has little to do with the facts. A commentary analysis.

What is new, however, are the colors in which the device is available and which have not been available from Apple for many years.

Sure: The hardware has been significantly slimmed down and the price smells less like a private office and more like a student apartment. But it has to come from somewhere. A backlit keyboard, Force Touch trackpad and more RAM are all things that you can miss, but strictly speaking you don’t need for classic office and Internet use.

Especially in digital media many criticize a lack of performance for video editing or complex creative work. What they forget: The Neo-Apple is not aimed at this target group at all. Instead, Apple is targeting Windows and Chromebook users, but especially students, who have previously avoided Macs due to high prices.

Of course there is also legitimate points of criticism. Tying Touch ID to the more expensive model seems like a security surcharge, and a MacBook without a keyboard backlight seems almost nostalgic in 2026. But in the context of the price, a different picture emerges. With the MacBook Neo, Apple doesn’t want to sell a bargain in the classic sense, but rather a deliberately reduced entry-level device. Or in short: a status symbol in savings mode that still unmistakably comes from Cupertino.

If Apple’s calculations work out, the MacBook Neo could become one of the most important Macs since the iMac become. Not because it is technologically revolutionary, but because it opens a new door to the price range below the classic Apple laptops. This could bring millions of potential buyers who previously ended up with cheap Windows devices or Chromebooks within reach.

But the real value lies less in the hardware than in the ecosystem. Because if you start with a cheap Mac, you will quickly end up with macOS, iCloud and perhaps at some point an iPhone or iPad. For Apple, the MacBook Neo is less of a laptop than an entry ticket. For regular customers it doesn’t seem very tempting.
