Since 2018, John Giannandrea has been entrusted with the task of advancing the area of artificial intelligence at Apple. Last year it was announced that he would be leaving the company – which happened in mid-April. After Apple’s official announcement, he retired. Apparently Giannandrea isn’t ready to put his feet up yet: Less than two weeks after his departure, it was announced that he had taken on a consulting position at the British AI start-up CuspAI. The stated goal of the company, founded in 2024: A platform for the AI-supported development and discovery of new materials and materials. They raised $30 million in a first round of financing in June 2024; In September 2025, they were guaranteed additional start-up capital worth over $100 million. The company, based in Great Britain, now wants to establish a location in the Californian “Bay Area”; Giannandrea should help them with this.
Part-time job
Giannandrea’s work for CuspAI will probably not be a full-time position, but will be limited to part-time consulting work. Apparently the Silicon Valley veteran wants to help several companies grow. Which other companies want to book the support of the high-ranking former Google and Apple employee remains a secret at the moment.
Versatile networked
John Giannandrea himself comes from the United Kingdom. However, he has been working in Silicon Valley for at least a quarter of a century. He worked, among other things, at General Magic, the IT pioneering company run by Macintosh veteran Andy Hertzfeld. His company Metaweb, founded in 2005, was taken over by Google in 2010, where he worked until he was headhunted by Apple. The search engine provider buried the knowledge database called Freebase, the main product of his start-up, in 2016. A large part of the structured data collected in it was absorbed into the Wikidata project.
