A private tour guide can completely change how you experience a city, especially in Berlin. But it’s not the right choice for every traveler or every trip. I sat down with Matti Geyer, a private tour guide in Berlin and Potsdam and one of our preferred partners, to answer the questions travelers ask us all the time so you can decide if hiring a private guide is right for your trip.

Quick answer
Is hiring a private tour guide in Berlin worth it? For many travelers, yes. A private guide maximizes your time and gives you a deeper experience of the city than you’d get on your own. It’s especially worth it in a city as big and complex as Berlin, where knowing what to see, how to get there, and what you’re actually looking at makes a huge impact on your experience.

Our Experience
Berlin is my favorite city in Germany and I’ve visited more times than I can count over the past 35+ years. More recently, Aaron and I have spent several weeks there doing on the ground research and exploring as much of the city as possible. That’s how we met Matti, who is a Berlin native, experienced tour guide, and one of our preferred partners.
Why Hire a Private Guide Instead of Exploring on Your Own?
Simply put, a private guide helps you maximize your time. A private guide helps you:
- Make the most of your limited time. Berlin is a big city and getting between landmarks takes longer than most people expect. A private guide like Matti takes your wish list and builds a realistic plan so you do and see what matters most to you without wasting hours in transit.
- Skip figuring out logistics. Your private guide takes you from place to place so you can focus on the experience and enjoy the city.
- Get to know Berlin rather than just see it. A private guide like Matti shares important local context, history, and details you’d never find on your own or even in a guidebook, giving you a deeper understanding of and connection to the places you visit.
Private Tour vs. Group Tour: What’s the Difference?
Group tours are less expensive, but they come with trade-offs. You’re on a fixed route, at a fixed pace, with people you don’t know. If someone in the group is slow, everyone waits. If your kid needs a break, you either hold up the group or fall behind. You might not get all of your questions answered. Or conversely, if someone in the group asks a ton of questions, you might find that annoying!
A private tour solves those problems because it’s flexible and built around what you actually want to see, learn about, and experience. You can ask tons of questions in the moment and then later in the tour circle back and go deeper. You can slow down or speed up and change course as needed. Your tour is completely focused on you…so if you want to combine various topics like WWII, street art, and local food, you can!
Private tours as especially helpful for:
- Families who want to keep their kids or teens engaged without worrying about slowing anyone down
- Curious travelers who want to go deep on specific topics like World War II, Cold War history, or Jewish Berlin
- Travelers who feel a little overwhelmed by planning their sightseeing and want guidance from someone who knows the city well
- Travelers who prefer a slower pace or have mobility considerations
What’s the Experience Like Spending Time with a Private Guide?
I hear from clients sometimes who worry it might feel awkward spending a couple hours or even a full day or more with someone they’ve never met. That makes them hesitate to hire a private guide, even though they’re drawn to the tailored experience.
Matti’s take? Do not worry! At every stop there’s something to talk about. And it’s Matti who does a lot of the talking!
If you’re on the quieter side, a good guide knows how to draw you in without it feeling forced. And you’re welcome to simply take everything in as Matti shares stories and context. Or you can ask as many questions as you’d like.
From our experience, the private guides we’ve worked with have all been so enjoyable to spend time with. They’re not only knowledgable, they’re personable and just fun people to hang out with!
Are There Walking, Mobility, and Kid-Friendly Options?
Yes to all three. Berlin is flat, which makes it much easier to get around on foot than many European cities.
But if walking is a challenge, Matti can arrange a car and driver. It adds to the cost but it’s a great option for travelers who need it.
Matti works with kids and teen groups regularly and is great at adjusting his approach to keep younger travelers engaged. He skips or simplifies the heavier content when needed, but doesn’t dumb it down. He gets great feedback from kids, teens, and parents.
How Does the Whole Process Typically Work from Inquiry to Tour?
It’s pretty straightforward. Here’s what to expect:
- Start on Matti’s website. Matti has around 12 tour options listed at toursofberlin.com so he recommends browsing his website to get a sense of what interests you. Then use the contact form to reach out with your travel dates and what you’d like to see.
- He’ll come back to you with a tour plan. Then, together you’ll nail down the logistics and how you’d like to pay for your tour.
- Matti wants to pick you up. On the day of your tour, Matti can pick you up at your hotel and you’ll start your tour!
