In short: New firmware for AirTag 2 +++ Improved dead zone app from the Federal Network Agency | News

The original generation of AirTags was released in April 2021 and was very popular. Almost five years after the presentation of the first generation, the company finally brought a new version onto the market with a U2 chip, louder speakers, increased range and better location accuracy. The second generation requires at least iOS 26.2.1. New firmware for AirTag 2
Apple has now released a software update for the second generation AirTags (currently 85 euros on Amazon in a pack of four). This is the second update for the tracker since it was released in January 2026. The new firmware has version number 3.0.49. Unfortunately, Apple does not communicate what changes have been made in the new firmware version.
The “Where Is?” app can be used to determine which firmware version is currently installed on an AirTag. Here you select the AirTag and then press the current address of the AirTag. Further information will then appear, such as the serial number and the currently installed software version. Unfortunately, it is not possible to initiate the update process manually; it runs completely automatically.
The dead zone app becomes a mobile phone check
The Federal Network Agency has been offering an app for several years to carry out speed and coverage tests in the mobile network. The Federal Network Agency has now renamed the “Funkloch app” to “Mobilfunk-Check” and completely revised the user interface of the practical app. The app is available as a free download from the App Store and requires an iPhone or iPad with iOS 13.0 or newer. The app only works with a cellular connection, but not if the iPhone or iPad is connected to WiFi. The reason is that the app is only intended to record the speed of cellular connections. The measured data then ends up with the Federal Network Agency, which uses it to identify deficiencies in network coverage.
