In short: Digital driving license is coming to Germany +++ Why OpenAI has discontinued Sora | News

For a few months now, it has been possible in this country to carry the “registration certificate Part I” digitally instead of on paper – i.e. the document that is usually simply referred to as the vehicle registration document. It was already said last November that they were already working on the next step. As in some US states, the same should also apply to driving licenses. The Bundestag has now created the legal basis for this and amended the Road Traffic Act accordingly. As the Federal Ministry of Transport states, they want to enable a corresponding national digital driving license by the end of the year, which can then be stored in the respective smartphone wallet. Before actual implementation, the Federal Council must give its approval, but this is considered a formality.
Why OpenAI discontinued Sora
Last week, to the surprise of many, OpenAI announced that it would be burying the video generation tool called Sora. Hardly anyone had expected this at the time, especially since negotiations were underway about a multi-billion dollar collaboration with Disney. However, the reasons for this step have now been leaked. At the top of the list were the immense costs.
Video generation is extremely computationally intensive. Estimates put OpenAI’s server costs at around $15 million per day, which equates to more than $5 billion per year. In the long-term preparations for an IPO, the company probably wanted to get rid of an area that was consuming more money than other projects without being able to even begin to recoup the costs.
In addition, officials recently said that they no longer wanted to distract themselves with “side quests” and instead wanted to concentrate all their energy on the main product and AGI research. Added to this were the at best average results that Sora spewed out – in addition to legal uncertainties regarding the training material and high requirements for moderating potentially illegal content.
