The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has launched a new campaign called “Encrypt It Already”. Big tech companies are being urged to expand end-to-end encryption to more services. At Apple, encryption is of course already used in some apps and services, although in some cases the user has to take action – for example in the case of extended data protection for iCloud (see here). The appeal is nevertheless also directed at Cupertino: The company should finally keep its promise to encrypt RCS messages at the factory. Although there are initial indications of this in the iOS 26.3 beta, there is no official launch date. Another point of criticism concerns AI: Apple (and Google too, by the way) would not give users clear configuration options to control the AI use of individual apps. The EFF also has a tip for users: they should contact the group using the feedback form. Whether this advice is actually effective remains to be seen: Many Apple customers report that their suggestions for improvements and bug reports generally go unheard.
Gemini during navigation for cyclists and pedestrians
Gemini is increasingly finding its way into Google’s Maps app: Since last year, users in this country have been able to rely on AI to call up more detailed information using voice commands while navigating in the car. This option is now also available to pedestrians and cyclists. They can start navigation and, for example, ask questions about nearby restaurants while walking or driving. Gemini also provides information about the estimated time of arrival or the next appointment. If users are traveling by bike, they no longer have to pick up their smartphone. Google points out the safety gain: Using voice commands, you can send messages to friends from the Maps app without having to take your hands off the handlebars.
