Grandma’s favorite hot chocolate – Grandma Cooks

Hot chocolate in glasses

In winter there is nothing better than a cup of hot chocolate. Well, maybe if this chocolate is topped with little marshmallows or whipped cream. But you can do it however you want. Here is a great recipe for this treat.

You can make your hot cocoa with water, milk, cream, or plant-based milk alternatives. When using plant-based “milk”, please note that many varieties are already slightly sweetened and reduce the added sugar accordingly according to the recipe.

Hot cocoa with a shot

For an extra punch, you can use whiskey or white rum. It gets particularly creamy with coffee liqueur or cream liqueur. For a fruitier note, orange liqueur or, the classic, amaretto with its almond aroma, are also suitable. Add the shot to the finished cocoa in the cup and stir briefly.

Stir hot cocoa

For a particularly rich drinking chocolate, use chocolate or couverture instead of cocoa powder. Let them slowly melt in the milk or water in the pot.

Tip for leftovers

If you have leftover hot chocolate, let it cool, pour into ice cube trays, and freeze. This gives you portable cocoa cubes that you can dissolve into milk or coffee as needed.

  • Put the milk (or water) and cream in a sufficiently large pot (preferably with a thick bottom) and set the stove to medium heat. From now on, always stick with it, because milk quickly boils over or burns.

  • When the milk mixture is warmed, stir in the cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla sugar (or flavoring), and spices. If you are using chocolate, break it into pieces and stir until dissolved.

  • Be careful not to let your cocoa boil.

  • When everything is hot, pour it into the cups, sprinkle some cinnamon over it and serve with some mini marshmallows or whipped cream.
