Geely overtakes Tesla and VW: The most innovative electric car manufacturers in 2026

Electromobility is turning the automotive industry more and more upside down. New players are conquering the market, and if you want to keep up, you have to invest in innovative technologies. In this ranking, we clarify which manufacturers do this best.

Electromobility has overcome many of its teething problems and is slowly entering its first phase of consolidation. The former pioneer Tesla is no longer the dominant innovative force in the industry. Chinese companies have caught up and many traditional manufacturers from Japan, Germany and the USA are trying not to be left behind. In this article we want to clarify which brands are advancing the industry’s technologies the most.

These are the 10 most innovative electric car manufacturers in 2026

When it comes to classic combustion engines, aspects such as brand image and pure performance are often crucial. But for cars with electric drives, parameters such as range, charging power and battery life have to be right in order to convince buyers. That is why the CAM Electromobility Report 2026 analyzes a total of 713 innovations in electromobility that were launched in the period from 2021 to 2025.

Even if the German automotive industry is not doing well at the moment, the manufacturers cannot be blamed for not bringing innovations to the market. Companies like Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are collectively responsible for over a third of all innovations worldwide. Only China has an even higher figure at 41 percent. Third place goes to Japan (11 percent), followed by the rest of the EU (10), the USA and South Korea (2 each).

In Germany people seem to have woken up, because since 2024 there has been an increase from around 20 to 34 percent. China’s curve has flattened somewhat, but companies like Nio lurk outside the top ten. The US doesn’t seem ready to invest on a large scale, even though Ford, Lucid and Rivian are knocking on the door of our rankings and could open it in the coming years. We’ll reveal who actually made it into the top ten in the following gallery.

10th place: General Motors

The US company General Motors is one of the losers in the current study and has an innovation score of 67.3 tenth place. Compared to the previous period from 2016 to 2020, this represents a decline of five places.
