Fan ports Command & Conquer Generals to iPhone & iPad | News

The “Command & Conquer” (C&C) game series, published since 1995, was a style-defining classic of real-time strategy. The title “Generals”, produced by Electronic Arts (LA), was released in 2003. Although no new real-time game has been released for this series since 2010, there is still a large and active fan base that keeps the titles alive. This group also created a version of “Command & Conquer: Generals” that can be played on iPhone and iPad. The “Generals-Mac-iOS-iPad” project brings the over 20-year-old title to Apple Silicon.

In the project description, developer Ammaar Reshi explains the challenges of getting the project running on Apple’s chips in general. The original source code, published at the beginning of 2025, was designed for graphic display via DirectX; Apple uses its own Metal framework. To accomplish this transition, DXVK first translates the original instructions to the more modern Vulkan engine. MoltenVK then converts the result to metal code.

Limitations in the mobile system
There were also requirements that arose particularly under iOS and iPadOS. The C&C engine expects a completely writable file system, while Apple uses read-only and signed bundles. As a result, countless paths had to be redirected to accommodate saves, caches, and configuration changes. In addition, iOS can take control of the process at any time – a mobile version must take this into account. Not easy either: C&C is played with a mouse and keyboard – intuitive touchscreen operation was needed.

Anthropics Fable code
The developer openly admits that he does not know the C++ programming language. The code was therefore produced by Anthropic’s Fable model. This was switched off after three days through intervention by the US government and has been available again since July 1st. Reshi himself led the LLM and played the results as a test. He described symptoms such as “the minimap is black” and “I hear chirping” and took on the role of decision-maker. In order to get the app running on their own device, users must have purchased the game on Steam and have the English version, have a (free) developer account and install Xcode on a Mac. The game can also be run on a Mac with Apple Silicon.

Extensive preparatory work
The iOS port is not a complete reinvention, but is a further development of the GeneralsX, which has been in development since March 2025. This provides a launcher for C&C Generals that works for both Macs and Linux. The twelfth beta is quite easy to install; It is more complicated to download the Windows version of the original game (which is also required) under macOS – Steam does not allow this easily.
