Delta Air Lines has launched the first-ever nonstop service between New York JFK and Malta, creating a direct link between the United States and the Mediterranean island nation. The milestone route is expected to boost tourism, strengthen cultural ties, and support Malta’s growing popularity among American travelers seeking authentic European experiences.
NEW YORK, NY — Malta reached a significant milestone in its tourism and aviation history on Sunday, June 7, as Delta Air Lines launched the first-ever nonstop service between the United States and Malta.
The inaugural flight departed New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) for Malta International Airport, opening a new chapter in transatlantic connectivity between the Mediterranean island nation and one of its fastest-growing tourism markets.
To mark the occasion, Visit Malta and Delta Air Lines hosted a destination-inspired gate celebration at JFK, introducing passengers to Maltese culture, hospitality, and the unique character of the Mediterranean archipelago before boarding the inaugural flight.
Joining Delta officials at the celebration were Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) CEO Carlo Micallef and Chief Officer Strategic Development and Deputy CEO Leslie Vella, who were among the passengers traveling on the historic inaugural service. Michelle Buttigieg, Malta Tourism Authority Representative for North America, personally welcomed travelers as they boarded the flight.
The launch represents years of strategic efforts by Malta to establish itself as a premier destination for North American travelers. Once considered a niche Mediterranean destination largely known among history enthusiasts, divers, and heritage travelers, Malta has steadily gained prominence in the US market over the past decade through targeted marketing, increased trade partnerships, luxury travel initiatives, and growing media exposure.
American interest in Malta has been fueled by the islands’ unique combination of more than 8,000 years of history, three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, English as an official language, a thriving culinary scene, luxury accommodations, and its role as a filming location for major productions including gladiator, game of Thrones, Napoleonetc Jurassic World Dominion.
“This inaugural Delta flight is a landmark achievement for Malta and a defining moment in our tourism relationship with North America,” said Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority. “For decades, Malta has captivated American travelers with its extraordinary blend of history, culture, gastronomy, and Mediterranean lifestyle. Today, that journey becomes significantly easier. This nonstop service removes barriers, creates new opportunities for growth, and positions Malta to welcome even more visitors from one of our most important long-haul markets.”

Micallef added, “But today is about more than a new flight route; it is about bringing two nations closer together, fostering cultural connections, and opening Malta’s doors wider than ever before to American visitors. We are proud to celebrate this historic occasion with Delta and look forward to welcoming many more travelers now with the nonstop service to our islands.”
While Malta has long been accessible to US travelers through European gateways such as London, Frankfurt, Munich, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Zurich, and Istanbul, requiring at least one connection, Delta’s new JFK service eliminates the need for a European stopover. Travelers have traditionally reached Malta through airline partners including Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, British Airways, ITA Airways, Turkish Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, and Emirates through their respective hub networks.
The new non-stop service reflects the growing maturity of Malta’s tourism relationship with North America. According to tourism officials, arrivals from the United States have consistently increased in recent years, with American visitors ranking among Malta’s highest-spending long-haul travelers.
The Delta launch follows a series of strategic initiatives by the Malta Tourism Authority to strengthen the destination’s profile across North America. These efforts include the opening of Visit Malta’s New York office, a three-city North America Luxury Roadshow designed to expand trade partnerships, and increased engagement with travel advisors, tour operators, journalists, and content creators.
“Today’s inaugural flight reflects the growing demand among American travelers for authentic, high-quality curated experiences,” said Michelle Buttigieg, Malta Tourism Authority Representative for North America. “The response from travel advisors, tour operators, media, and consumers has been overwhelmingly positive. This nonstop connection provides American travelers with a unique opportunity to have direct access to explore one of Europe’s most diverse destinations.”
Coinciding with the launch, Malta introduced its first-ever Delta Vacations program, allowing travelers to book customized holiday packages built around Delta’s nonstop service. The program features curated itineraries showcasing Malta’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, luxury resorts and boutique hotels, MICHELIN-starred restaurants, cultural festivals, yachting experiences, diving opportunities, and the crystal-clear waters that have helped establish the islands as one of the Mediterranean’s premier leisure destinations.

Industry observers view the route as a significant endorsement of Malta’s growing appeal among American travelers seeking authentic European experiences beyond traditional destinations. The new service also positions Malta competitively alongside other Mediterranean destinations that have benefited from direct US air access.
For Delta Air Lines, the route further expands the carrier’s European network while introducing one of the Mediterranean’s most historically rich destinations to its customer base. For Malta, the flight represents not only improved accessibility but also recognition of the country’s emergence as a major player in the North American travel market.
The seasonal Delta Air Lines service will operate between New York-JFK and Malta International Airport through October 23, 2026, providing travelers with a convenient gateway to explore Malta and its sister islands, Gozo and Comino. Tourism officials and industry stakeholders alike expect the route to strengthen economic ties, boost visitor arrivals, and further elevate Malta’s profile among American travelers for years to come.
