A new countryside escape is coming to northern Japan. Azuma Farm Koiwaia boutique nature retreat developed by Azumi Japan in collaboration with East Japan Railway Companywill officially open on April 23, 2026 in Iwate Prefecture.

Set within the historic grounds of Koiwai Farmthe retreat introduces a new luxury farm-stay concept designed around nature, agriculture and seasonal living. Spanning eight hectares inside the farm’s sprawling 3,000-hectare estate, the property offers sweeping views of Mount Iwatesurrounded by forests and open pastureland.

The opening also marks the debut of the Azuma Farm brand, a new hospitality concept from Azumi Japan inspired by Japan’s agrarian traditions. The brand builds on the vision of legendary hotelier Adrian Zechawho previously launched Azumi Setoda in 2021 as a modern interpretation of the ryokan.

While Azumi Setoda drew inspiration from Japan’s coastal culture, Azuma Farm shifts focus to the country’s rural landscapes. The concept centers on a philosophy of “Farm Life,” emphasizing harmony with land, food, and the changing seasons through farm-to-table cuisine, nature-based programming and immersive countryside living.

The project also reflects JR East’s broader push to spotlight regional Japan. Located just two hours and 20 minutes from Tokyo via Shinkansen to Moriokawith a short 25-minute drive to the property, Azuma Farm Koiwai positions itself as a gateway to the wider Tohoku region.

Known for its dramatic landscapes, deep-rooted craft culture and seasonal beauty, Tohoku remains one of Japan’s most under-the-radar destinations. With Azuma Farm Koiwai, the region gains a design-led retreat that blends heritage, hospitality and nature into a new kind of slow-luxury travel experience.

Reservations are now open ahead of the April 2026 launch.
