This recipe is really fun, especially when children can help. You can mix, fill and decorate to your heart’s content. We used colorful sprinkles as decoration, which the children especially found very funny. Homemade bath bombs are eco-friendly, individual and a really great gift. Our boys can’t wait to give them as gifts.
Ingredients for 8 – 9 small bath bombs
The list of ingredients is short and available everywhere. You can replace the special bath bomb shapes with other shapes. For example, silicone baking molds are suitable. And you only need one or two of the balls because you only need them to squeeze. The bath bombs can also be dried without a mold.
- 120g coconut oil
- 430 g baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, e.g. Kaiser Natron – not baking powder)
- 250 g citric acid (powder, food grade)
- 120 g cornstarch
- Optional ingredients: food coloring or powdered cosmetic coloring; 1 handful of dried flowers (e.g. rose, lavender or marigold); 5-20 drops of food or cosmetic grade essential oil
Step-by-step instructions for the bath bomb recipe
Preparation is very easy and with these step-by-step instructions it will definitely work.
1. Melt coconut oil
Heat the coconut oil in a pot or water bath until it is liquid. It shouldn’t be hot, just pleasantly warm. If it is too hot, let it cool for 10-15 minutes before using it.
2. Mix dry ingredients
Mix baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch in a large bowl. If you want to use paint, stir it in directly. You can also add the flowers now. Alternatively, you can simply put them in the bottom of the mold; when you press the mixture in, they will stick to the outside.
3. Add liquid
Slowly add the coconut oil and mix everything well. Now the essential oils are also added. Knead with your hands until the mixture is slightly moist and malleable.
4. Check consistency
The dough should look like wet sand. If it crumbles, add a little more coconut oil. If it sticks, you can stir in a little more starch.
5. Shapes
Press the mixture firmly into the molds. The harder you press, the better the bath bombs will hold.
6. Drying
Remove the bath bomb from the mold and let it dry at room temperature for at least 24 hours. If you need to do it quicker, put it in the fridge for at least 4 hours.
If the bath bombs are too wet or too dry
Sometimes you need a little more of certain ingredients to get the consistency perfect. The mass should be like wet sand and malleable.
- Too humid: If they foam or expand, there was too much liquid. Add a little more starch or baking soda and mix again.
- Too dry: If the dough doesn’t hold together, add some coconut oil. Just enough so that the mass can be easily shaped again.
How long do bath bombs need to dry?
After a day the bath bombs are usually stable, but after two days they become really solid. You can then store them in airtight jars or package them nicely. They remain effervescent for several months as long as they are stored dry. This is a wonderful way to prepare them. to start the pre-Christmas season stress-free.
