This evening Apple released the first pre-release versions of iOS 26.4, macOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, watchOS 26.4, tvOS 26.4 and visionOS 26.4 for registered developers. According to various rumor sources, this version was actually supposed to bring the new generation of Siri – but according to a report, Apple encountered difficulties integrating the Google Gemini AI models and had to delay the introduction. Better streaming for video podcasts
But the new preliminary versions bring another innovation – namely regarding podcasts. Apple is now relying on HTTP Live Streaming in the new version, as the company announced in a press release. This allows the user to switch between the video and audio versions while listening to a podcast. Furthermore, HLS can be used to react to rapidly changing network conditions – and for the first time it is possible to download video podcasts for offline playback.
Integration of advertising networks
Apple also announces that it is now possible for podcasters to integrate video advertising networks into video podcasts so that providers can finance themselves through this. According to Apple, Acast, Amazon’s ART19, iHeartMedia’s Triton Digital, SiriusXM, AdsWizz and Simplecas support integration into the Podcasts app. This is the first time podcasters will be able to show dynamic ads in video podcasts, Apple said.
Apple wants participation from advertising networks
For podcasters, the displays of dynamic advertising videos are free of charge – but Apple probably wants to charge the advertising networks a fixed rate per display. However, the podcasters will most likely pay indirectly, as it can be assumed that the advertising networks will reduce their payout by exactly the amount required by Apple.
Not on Mac?
Apple announces in the press release that the first pre-release version of iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4 and visionOS 26.4 brings the improved video podcasts. Apple also writes that the final versions will appear in the spring – and the web version of Podcasts also supports HLS video. Curiously, Apple doesn’t mention the Mac in the press release, and so it’s highly likely that the Podcast app on the Mac will get the new features either later or not at all.
