Apple’s cooperation with Formula 1: Much more than live streaming | News

The Formula 1 World Championship has many fans who follow the two-man teams in up to 24 annual races on high-speed racing tracks around the world. With F1 – The Film, Apple is setting a monument to the sport and at the same time achieving real audience success. It has been known since October 2025 that the group has secured exclusive broadcasting rights for the next five years. But the cooperation goes beyond simply broadcasting the races: According to Jim DeLorenzo, many other departments are involved.

“When we enter into a partnership like this, it’s not just Apple Sports or Apple Video involved, it’s a collaboration with Apple,” explained the Apple Sports boss at the “Autosport Business Exchange London” industry trade fair. “That means getting the whole company to think about how we grow together with F1, with the teams, with the drivers.” He didn’t want to reveal too many details, but he did point to an example from baseball: iPhones were used as cameras during a live broadcast – with the aim of improving the experience for fans.

iPhone based wing camera
Apple’s hardware developers were already involved during the production of the Formula 1 film with Brad Pitt in the lead role: a special camera based on iPhone components was created, which raced along in the spoiler of some Formula 1 vehicles over the course of two years in order to capture authentic driving scenes from the driver’s perspective. Broadcast in Germany questionable
In addition to scenes from the vehicles, a variety of Apple products are available to enrich live streaming or edited documentaries. As usual, Apple will not reveal any details until they are ready for publication. So far, the exclusive broadcast rights have been limited to the US market. In Germany, the broadcasting rights for live events lie with Sky. The next race will take place in Melbourne (Australia) from March 6th to 8th. The free “Apple Sports” app accompanies the individual Formula 1 races and presents current results on the iPhone lock screen upon request.
