
The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority honored key diaspora and industry partners in New York for their contributions to promoting the destination. The event highlighted the vital role of dedicated individuals in strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s presence in the US market and supporting its tourism growth through strong partnerships and community ties.
New York, USA – The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA) hosted its second annual Diaspora Celebration in Manhattan, recognizing a distinguished group of individuals whose dedication, generosity, and professionalism have played a vital role in promoting Antigua and Barbuda across the United States.
The recognition event brought together key officials and partners, including the Hon. Charles “Max” Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation, and Investment for Antigua and Barbuda; Dean Fenton, ABTA Director of Tourism, USA; and Michelle Lightfoot, Consular Officer at the Antigua and Barbuda Consulate General in New York.
The evening celebrated long-standing friends and partners of the destination whose behind-the-scenes efforts ensure Antigua and Barbuda is represented with warmth, excellence, and professionalism in the New York market and beyond.
Among the honorees was Marcia Skyer James, Director of Sales and Marketing at The Kimberly Hotel. A trusted ABTA partner, Skyer James has consistently gone above and beyond, often securing last-minute accommodations for visiting VIPs and dignitaries, ensuring a seamless and welcoming experience.
Also recognized was Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Kathy Sledge, a founding member of Sister Sledge and an ambassador for the Halo Foundation. A long-time supporter of Antigua and Barbuda, Sledge has championed the destination while contributing to charitable initiatives benefiting local communities.
Tabassum Qureshi, affectionately known as “Mr. Tabs,” was honored for his dependable transportation services through Ann’s Car and Limo Service. His professionalism ensures that visiting dignitaries and VIP guests are handled with efficiency and care.
Veteran steelpan musician Patrick “Johnny” Gomes, a founding member of the City South Steel Orchestra in the Bronx, was celebrated for his enduring contributions to ABTA events, bringing the vibrant sounds of Caribbean steelpan music to audiences and supporting the organization since its early days.
Kim Essen, Business Development Manager for the West Coast, was also recognized for her unwavering commitment to Antigua and Barbuda, which began even before her formal appointment, as she volunteered her expertise to advance the destination’s visibility.

Sandra Reid, now an Administrative Executive with the New York State Assembly, was honored for her extensive contributions to tourism initiatives. Her past roles with the Department of Tourism in New York and the Ministry of Agriculture in Antigua and Barbuda included facilitating wedding ceremonies for visiting couples—an important niche in the destination’s tourism offering.
The Tourism Authority also recognized Ashton Gregory, known as “Junior,” for his reliable logistical support, ensuring smooth operations for ABTA events throughout the New York area.
In his remarks, Minister Fernandez emphasized the importance of people in building a successful tourism industry.
“Tourism is built not only on beautiful beaches and world-class experiences, but on the dedication of people who believe in our destination and give their time, talent, and support to help it succeed,” he said. “These honorees have become part of the extended family of Antigua and Barbuda, and we are deeply grateful for their role in strengthening our presence in the United States.”
Dean Fenton echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of partnerships.
“The success of Antigua and Barbuda in the US market is made possible by committed partners and friends who consistently go above and beyond,” he noted. “Each of these individuals has supported our mission in meaningful ways, helping us showcase the warmth, culture, and hospitality that define Antigua and Barbuda.”
Several honorees were unable to attend but were recognized for their contributions, including Ted Martin of Uncle Ted’s Island Adventures and Tours; Radlie Baptiste of Baptiste Antiguan Experience; Susan Coulton, former Mid-Atlantic Business Development Manager at ABTA; and Jackley Peters of the Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda in New York.
The Diaspora Celebration underscored ABTA’s appreciation for the network of supporters who continue to elevate Antigua and Barbuda’s international profile while strengthening ties within the Caribbean diaspora community in New York.
