Gaston Browne says the first scheduled Air Peace flight from Lagos, Nigeria, on Monday, May 25, will not land in Antigua, amidst concerns over an Ebola outbreak which has roiled two African countries. The flight was scheduled for Antigua, onward to Barbados, and then to Lagos. He says the flight will likely land in Barbados.
The head of government made the announcement on the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe Broadcasting Network on Saturday, indicating that it is a conservative position to minimize risk from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. He says the government’s position has also been shaped by the memory of the imbroglio over conflict migrants who arrived on an Antigua Airways flight in late 2022.
The prime minister also says the transit visa waiver protocols are not being put in place to facilitate this trans-Atlantic flight, but the government will monitor the situation regarding future flights on this route.
Air Peace had earlier announced the twice-monthly scheduled flights linking Antigua and Barbuda with Lagos, with a stop in Barbados.
