Taking fashion seriously and taking fashion rules seriously: These are two completely different things. One is worth it, the other just costs energy. For me, the clash of styles between cargo pants and a ruffled blouse is the perfect example of how unnecessary many of these supposed rules actually are.
I take fashion very seriously: as a means of expression, as an attitude, as a daily decision about who I want to be. But the unwritten rules that say what supposedly cannot be combined? You can safely ignore them. They were probably created by the same people who used to claim that socks in sandals were a fashion crime until Gen Z quickly declared it a statement. It can happen that quickly. Today it’s about another rule that I would like to put up for discussion: the strict separation of romantic and rustic.

Why cargo pants can do more than just be practical
Let’s start with the basics: the cargo pants. For years she was mercilessly pushed into the corner of “practical” clothing. You could see it on people who put functionality above all else and for whom the term “handbag” triggers a tired smile. Practical, yes. Stylish? Not likely, at least that’s the prejudice.
But let’s be honest: in light beige and with a wide, flowing cut, these pants have the potential for so much more than just the hardware store. It’s incredibly comfortable, it’s casual and it immediately takes the severity out of any outfit – without slipping into arbitrariness. This is rarer than you think.
Why the style break between cargo pants and a ruffled blouse works
And this is exactly where the counterpart comes into play. A white blouse with lush ruffles. Normally you would combine this blouse with a strict pencil skirt or elegant Marlene trousers. Very chic, very predictable. But if you put this concentrated, innocent romance into the patched, sturdy pockets of the cargo pants, something exciting happens. The trousers ground the blouse, bringing it down from its high, romantic horse, and the blouse in turn refines the trousers so that they suddenly seem to belong somewhere else entirely. It’s like a good meal: a generous pinch of sea salt on the dark chocolate really rounds off the taste.
The contrast makes the look interesting and takes away from it being overly trying. That’s exactly what makes the style clash between cargo pants and a ruffled blouse so exciting for me. It doesn’t look slick, it doesn’t seem cerebral and it doesn’t look like you’ve spent three hours in front of the mirror.
Leo loafers: the icing on the cake
Now we could combine white sneakers with it at this point. That would be the safe bet. That would be the simplest solution and the most predictable. Instead, we slip into leopard-print loafers. After all, animal print is just a type of neutral if you use it correctly. At least that’s what I’ve been telling myself for years and surprisingly, this theory works pretty reliably.
These shoes give the outfit that little, unexpected twist that says, “Yes, I’ve thought about it, but I’m not taking this all dead seriously.” It’s a wink to all those who think that once you reach a certain age you only have to dress in beige and gray. Plus a classic, brown leather bag that matches the color of the shoes, at the same time brings calm to the look and is large enough to store all the things that you don’t want to put in the cargo pockets – baggy knees are not the goal after all.
Different shades of red bite each other – and other fairy tales
Speaking of unwritten rules. This week I shared a reel on my Insta channel that deals with exactly such an old fashion wisdom. My grandma always used to say, “Different shades of red bite each other!” For her, this was an irrefutable law of nature, right after “Don’t go out with wet hair, otherwise you’ll get sick.” And what can I say? I stuck to it for years. Just no Bordeaux with the bright tomato red.
But honestly: I dared the experiment and no one complained. Not even the mirror. Just like when you break the style of cargo pants and a ruffled blouse, you often only notice when you wear them that many of the rules are actually just habits.
It’s these old, dusty ideas that sometimes stop us from enjoying what fashion can actually be: a way to show who we are without someone having to give us a permit.
Fashion is not a set of rules, but a playground
That’s exactly what fashion is all about for me now: taking it seriously without being restricted by any rules. If a ruffled blouse goes with cargo pants, then it fits. If leopard loafers complete the outfit, then so be it. I just no longer believe that anyone should decide what goes together and what doesn’t.
