iPhone batteries are among the essential components of the smartphone; after all, they ensure that the system chip and other components can carry out their tasks. A lot has changed in the almost two decades since the introduction of the first iPhone – while the device released in 2007 had a capacity of 1,400 mAh, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will have more than 5,400 mAh from September. At the same time, it is the component of all smartphones that has to be replaced particularly frequently, because after a few years of use the performance is significantly below the delivery state. Here you can either rely on original spare parts or products from third-party providers. iFixit shows in a video how the batteries that are sold in the repair shop are manufactured. First, iFixit shows the dimensions of the factory, which according to its own information produces almost 13 million battery cells per month. The actual cell consists of numerous extremely thin layers that are manufactured with very tight tolerances. The module then receives its Battery Management System, or “BMS” for short – the small circuit board prevents, among other things, overcharging, deep discharging and excessive currents. After programming with the appropriate software, we then move on to final production and quality control.
…until the battery is ready for use
A machine controls, among other things, internal resistance, capacity and behavior in the event of overcurrent. In the video, iFixit employee Shahram Mokhtari then reads out the charge status, temperature, design capacity, maximum capacity and calculated battery status – for the new battery shown, this is mathematically even 101 percent. Finally, the peel-off adhesive strips are attached with which the battery can later be attached to the iPhone. Mokhtari inserts the component he personally manufactured into an iPhone – and successfully puts the device into operation.
