MuleSoft and Akamai announced an expanded partnership to help enterprise customers strengthen API security and governance across hybrid, multi-cloud, and AI-driven environments.
As organizations adopt AI-driven applications and agentic workflows, APIs increasingly connect applications, data, models, agents, and services across the enterprise. This growth introduces new security and governance challenges, especially when APIs, MCP servers, and related assets are undocumented, unmanaged, or not consistently protected.
The new integration connects Akamai API Security with MuleSoft, bringing Akamai’s API discovery, API risk scoring, behavioral analysis, and security findings into MuleSoft’s API management and agent governance environment. Together, the companies help customers gain visibility into shadow and unmanaged APIs, strengthen API governance, and apply consistent policies across APIs and agentic architectures.
Akamai API Security adds dedicated API and MCP security context
Akamai API Security helps organizations discover, analyze, and prioritize risk across APIs and MCP servers using connected traffic sources (CDNs, cloud providers, API gateways, and application workloads), code repositories, and API documentation. Through the Akamai API Security Scanner, these insights flow into MuleSoft, where teams can use Akamai’s API security context to strengthen governance, apply policies, and bring previously unmanaged assets under control.
By combining MuleSoft API management context with Akamai API Security insights, customers gain a clearer understanding of which APIs exist, where they are managed, how they behave, and where additional security or governance attention may be needed.
Connecting API governance and API security
MuleSoft helps organizations connect and govern applications, data, APIs, agents, and MCP servers across distributed enterprise environments. With MuleSoft, teams can design, manage, secure, and govern APIs and MCP endpoints, apply policies such as authentication and rate limiting, and use Agent Fabric to manage agentic assets and governance workflows.
With Akamai API Security-discovered endpoints flowing into MuleSoft, customers can bring previously unmanaged APIs and MCP servers under formal governance, apply MuleSoft policies where needed, and improve oversight across APIs, MCP servers, and agentic architectures.
Through the MuleSoft integration, Akamai imports MuleSoft-managed API context into the Akamai API inventory, correlates MuleSoft APIs with APIs observed in traffic, and identifies MuleSoft-managed APIs that may not currently be protected by Akamai runtime behavioral traffic analysis.
The integration will also synchronize API specifications from MuleSoft Exchange into Akamai API Security, helping customers automate traffic-to-spec conformance analysis and strengthen shadow and zombie API detection.

For Akamai API Security customers using MuleSoft, the integration helps improve inventory accuracy, governance context, and remediation workflows. Customers can:
- Automatically import MuleSoft-managed API context into Akamai API Security and use MuleSoft metadata, such as environment, owner, lifecycle, contracts, and policy-related context, to prioritize remediation
- Correlate MuleSoft-managed APIs with APIs observed in runtime traffic to identify unprotected APIs
- Sync API specifications from MuleSoft’s Exchange into Akamai API Security to improve traffic-to-spec analysis and shadow or zombie API detection
