Jamaica Diplomats Get Tourism Briefing Ahead of Global Postings

Fifteen Jamaican Foreign Service officers preparing for overseas assignments received a comprehensive tourism briefing from the Jamaica Tourist Board. The initiative strengthens cooperation between diplomacy and tourism, equipping diplomats to promote Destination Jamaica, support investment opportunities, and help advance the nation’s ambitious visitor growth and economic development goals.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — As fifteen Jamaican Foreign Service officers prepare to take up assignments this summer in major cities across the globe, they are receiving more than diplomatic credentials—they are being equipped to serve as ambassadors for Jamaica’s tourism industry.

At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) recently hosted a strategic briefing session at its Kingston headquarters for officers scheduled to begin tours of duty across three continents. The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration between diplomacy and tourism promotion, ensuring that Jamaica’s representatives abroad are prepared to advocate effectively for one of the nation’s most important economic sectors.

The officers will be stationed in key international markets, including New York, Washington, Miami, Toronto, London, Brussels, Berlin, Mexico City, Tokyo, Havana, Geneva, and Port-of-Spain. According to tourism officials, these locations represent some of Jamaica’s most valuable source markets and strategic diplomatic centers.

“This is what it looks like when two ministries pull in the same direction for one Jamaica,” said Donovan White, Director of Tourism. “Foreign Affairs places our people in the world’s capitals, and Tourism gives them the story to tell when they get there. The country wins twice.”

During the session, participants received updates on the JTB’s strategic priorities, market positioning, consumer trends, partnership opportunities, and crisis-response protocols. The goal is to ensure that diplomats can accurately represent Jamaica’s tourism offerings and respond confidently to inquiries from investors, media representatives, and potential visitors.

Tourism remains one of Jamaica’s leading economic drivers, generating foreign exchange earnings and supporting livelihoods across a broad spectrum of industries, from agriculture and craft production to transportation and hospitality.

“Every officer we brief becomes a frontline ambassador for Destination Jamaica, whether or not it appears in their job description,” White noted. “A confident answer in a consulate in New York or a trade mission in Tokyo can become a booking, an investment, or an advocate for life.”

The briefing aligns with the tourism sector’s ambitious 5x8x10 growth strategy, which seeks to attract eight million visitors and generate US$10 billion in annual earnings by 2030. Officials emphasize that achieving these goals will require coordinated efforts across government agencies, diplomatic missions, and tourism stakeholders.

“We will not reach US$10 billion from Jamaica alone,” White said. “We reach it in the rooms where decisions are made. These include embassies, trade missions, and consulates where our officers sit every day. Diplomacy and tourism are partners, and this is that partnership in action.”

The initiative continues a longstanding collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and the Jamaica Tourist Board, which regularly provides destination briefings to diplomats before overseas postings.

“Diplomacy opens doors,” White concluded. “Tourism walks through them.”
