Anthropic is looking for a well-paid person with religious-sounding skills. Tech and faith have other amazing overlaps.
Anthropic is seeking a committed follower willing to spread the gospel of Claude. The company is hiring an “Applied AI Claude Evangelist.” In this role, the individual will work with startups to help them launch Anthropic’s products.
The Claude Evangelist will be “the face of Anthropic” among venture capitalists, startup founders and accelerators. He or she will lead developer onboarding, create demos and tutorials, and share feedback with the internal team.
Salary of a quarter of a million
A significant part of the activity will be the implementation of live events. One of the tasks: “Design and deliver hands-on technical sessions that move developers from curiosity to active development within a single event.”
The position requires seven years of professional experience and a background as a technical founder or employee of a startup. Annual salary ranges from $240,000 to $315,000.
“Evangelist” may seem like an unusual job title at first glance, but it is by no means unprecedented in the tech industry. For example, Apple once had a position as “Chief Evangelist.”
AI is a bit of a cult
The Claude Evangelist is one of several new jobs that have emerged from the AI revolution. Another recently created job: “Forward Deployed AI Accelerator.” The title comes from payment processing company Stripe, which filled a position in its marketing team to reinforce good AI habits.
The forward deployed model has since spread beyond Stripe. On Monday, OpenAI announced the new $10 billion OpenAI Deployment Company. Thanks to the acquisition of the consulting firm Tomoro, it will start with a core of around 150 “forward deployed” engineers.
And while the job title “evangelist” understandably brings to mind religion, there are even clearer religious references in the AI industry. Former Google and Uber engineer Anthony Levandowski famously founded an AI church years ago. In 2024, Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch said that AGI’s obsession was about “creating God.” In October, Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar explained that AI pessimism was driven by a lack of religion.
Preacher skills wanted
Meanwhile, Anthropic and OpenAI recently met with religious leaders for a roundtable called “Faith-AI Covenant” to discuss how best to instill a sense of right and wrong in AI systems.
Those considering applying should keep in mind that the position at Anthropic may require the role of a preacher rather than a developer. A good candidate should have “the ability to command a room,” the job ad states.
