WhatsApp has always placed great importance on privacy. However, if you want to protect your WhatsApp chats even better, you can activate Face ID on your iPhone. We’ll show you how to turn the function on in just a few steps.
The popularity of WhatsApp remains unbroken. Millions of people use Messenger every day to stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues.
It is therefore hardly surprising that WhatsApp took first place in the ranking of the most popular social networks and messengers in Germany in 2025 with 85.1 percent of Internet users. Facebook followed far behind with a value of 58.9 percent.
But it is precisely the intensive use of the messenger that leads to more and more personal and sensitive content being exchanged via WhatsApp. Therefore, protecting their own chats is becoming increasingly important for many users in order to protect personal information from unauthorized access.
An easy way to do this is using facial recognition on your iPhone. With Face ID you can additionally secure access to WhatsApp so that only you can open your chats. We’ll show you how to make the settings.
iPhone: Activate Face ID for WhatsApp
By setting up Face ID on WhatsApp, you can prevent other people from reading your messages or even sending their own messages on your behalf. The setting is done with just a few clicks.
To do this, open WhatsApp and navigate to your profile by clicking on your profile picture in the bottom right corner of your screen. Here you will find the data protection area.
If you scroll down a bit, you will come to the “App Lock” point. Here you can now use a slider to activate that WhatsApp can only be opened with Face ID in the future.
If you have activated the setting, WhatsApp will give you various options to choose from. Here you can set whether the chat block should take effect immediately, after a minute, after 15 minutes or after an hour.
Alternative way to hire
Face ID can also be activated for WhatsApp via your home screen. To do this, briefly press and hold the app until the small menu opens.
Now select the “Request Face ID” option. A small window will then open in which you have to confirm the setting. It is also noted that app content does not appear in notification previews or Spotlight.
The function is available for all devices since the iPhone 5s and iOS 9 and can also be used with Touch ID. If Face ID or Touch ID doesn’t work, you can also use your code.
