Do you know what’s funny? While I can’t remember where I put my screen glasses, there are some things I never forget. The smell of my mother’s plum dumplings. The first kiss. Or the feeling of being able to put on your big sister’s cowboy boots for the first time.
It must have been the late 80s or early 90s. My cool big sister had these incredibly casual cowboy boots. I don’t remember where she got them from, but I do remember that I adored her. Not just the boots, also the sister. At some point they were too small for her or too uncool or whatever and I inherited them. In my memory, this was the first time I enjoyed applying something. It was the first time that I not only wore a piece of clothing, but also felt it. I wore these boots with every look. I loved them until the sole was so worn out that even my mother’s cobbler just shook his head in pity. Oh yes, those were the days.
And here I am, over 30 years later, wearing cowboy boots again. Not the same, but the feeling is damn similar. A little bit rebellious, a little bit nostalgic and damn comfortable. Who would have thought.

Why cowboy boots never really went away (just sometimes quieter)
Let’s be honest: cowboy boots are like the Rolling Stones. They have been touring the fashion world for decades, occasionally taking a creative break, but never disappearing. There are times when you see them on every corner, combined with floral dresses at festivals or with skinny jeans in the city. And then there are times when they withdraw a bit and are only on the radar of real fans. But gone? Never.
That’s the beauty of true classics. They are immune to the hysterical ebb and flow of trends. A cowboy boot is not a short-lived hype that disappears after one season. He is a statement. A piece of stability in a world that is moving ever faster. He says, “I know who I am. I don’t have to please everyone.” Maybe that’s why I feel so comfortable in them again. And hey, in Texas, I think the cowboy boot is just really important footwear and not just a stylish upgrade to a look.

The long denim skirt: A partner who first had to prove himself
Let’s move on to the second main star of this look: the long denim skirt. And I’ll tell it like it is: I’m actually not a jeans-skirt-in-everyday person. Long skirts and me, that’s a thing. I take giant steps. Always. And a long skirt – no matter how nice the slit is – just limits me. To be honest, the slit on this model from Max Mara Weekend is more decorative than functional. So no, this is not a part that can be used to quickly reach the tram.
But. I’m going through a bit of a Western phase right now. And in combination with the cowboy boots from Zara, this skirt just looks damn good. This is not an everyday outfit, this is a look. And sometimes that’s exactly what you need: an outfit that isn’t practical, but just looks good and feels right. The boots give the skirt the necessary casualness, the skirt gives the boots a stage. Together it creates this western vibe that just appeals to me. Not suitable for everyday use, but suitable for everyday escapes. And sometimes that counts more.
Cardigan and blouse: A declaration of love for good old quality
Now I have to clarify something. The cardigan and blouse I’m wearing here are both from THE BRITISH SHOP. And yes, both come from cooperation with the British sender. After all, the professional when it comes to British quality has been one of my regular cooperation partners for almost ten years. But this post is NOT paid advertising. I wear these pieces because I love them. Point.
And for me that is the best proof of quality. When you pull pieces from previous collaborations out of the closet again and again, not because you have to, but because you want to. Because they feel good, because they fit perfectly, because they still look like new even after the tenth wash. For me that is sustainability. Not to constantly buy new things, but to invest in pieces that last.
This cardigan is one such piece. Somehow it always fits: with jeans, over dresses, with a skirt. It doesn’t scream, but it instantly makes any outfit a little better. Same with the blouse. Classic but not boring. And just great quality. That’s the kind of fashion I like. Reliable. By the way, I don’t just like this about fashion. I also really appreciate reliability when it comes to people.
The jacket question: leather or bomber?
A look like this just needs a jacket. Not a big deal, but a decision nonetheless. And because I couldn’t decide, I simply photographed the look with two jackets.
Variant one: the black leather jacket from Zara. This is from the last fall collection and I particularly like that it looks like it’s ancient. Zara can do that vintage vibe. It gives the look a certain edge and takes a bit of the braveness out of the well-behaved cardigan-blouse combination. Nothing more, nothing less.
Option two: my new bomber jacket. I love them too. It makes the look more compact, modern, a little sportier. Less western, more city. And honestly, I’m wearing it with almost everything right now because it goes with everything.
Both variants work, both tell a slightly different story. And that’s exactly the beauty of fashion: sometimes a change of jacket is enough and you have a completely different outfit.
Are cowboy boots just for the wild west or the next festival? Nonsense. These things are versatile. Here are a few ideas on how you can wear them in everyday life without a horse and a lasso:
- About dresses: The simplest option. No matter whether it’s a short floral dress or a long knitted dress. Cowboy boots always work and give the look a cool, casual look.
- About the jeans: Yes, that works again. Tuck a pair of slim-fit jeans into your boots. Looks great with an oversized blazer or a thick sweater.
- Under wide pants: My favorite. Wide fabric trousers or Marlene trousers that fall loosely over the shaft of the boots. You only see the top, but it gives the whole hallway a different attitude.
- To the skirt: As shown here. Long denim skirt, short leather skirt, swinging midi skirt: everything goes. The trick is to play with the proportions.
In the end there is only one rule: it has to feel good for you. If it makes you feel like a country singer in disguise, don’t do it. If you feel like a cool bastard (uh, sorry), then this is the place to be.
More than just a shoe
To me, this look is more than just the sum of its parts. It’s a little journey through time. A memory of my youth, but without the pressure of having to do everything the way I did back then. It is the realization that good things last. Whether it’s the love of cowboy boots or a cardigan that just never goes out of style.
Fashion should be fun. It should make us feel good. And sometimes, yes sometimes, she even tells a little story about us. About who we were and who we are today.
