Hello!
Today I would like to show you my latest sewing project: I was allowed to sew one of Katiela’s great cassette bags! This is the 80s Hits version, which you can also find in the current pre-order.

I discovered the cool cassette bags a while ago. I spotted so many of these retro-designed bags and bags from some of my favorite sewing bloggers – including Sally Sews, nemone_loves_to_sew and radiokopf – and then immediately ordered a sewing set for myself. I particularly liked the 90s version (how beautiful is that leopard pattern?!) and the love songs also really appealed to me.

I met Katiela in person at the creative fair in Stuttgart and felt very honored when she asked me shortly afterwards if I would like to sew and photograph one of the designs from the May pre-order. Of course I wanted to!
New in this pre-order round: The designs are produced using organic fabric from Albstoffe.

My choice fell on the 80s hits cassette bag! I love the cheerful color combination and the curved design – and besides, I’m a child of the 80s myself and can sing along to some of the hits from that time.

With the sewing set for the large cassette bag, you receive your selected design printed on a sturdy organic canvas (100% cotton) produced by Albstoffe. The fabric panel is 150cm wide and 75cm long. The finished bag measures approx. 35 x 25 x 9cm.
In addition to the large bags, there are also small bags, cushion covers and key rings in Katiela’s shop – and even yard goods with some of the great designs for the inside pockets!

My adjustments/changes

I followed Katiela’s instructions. This worked out pretty well, even though I don’t have much experience sewing bags yet.
In any case, it is very important that the zipper is open enough before the final sewing of the parts and turning them over! I managed to overlook this with a small bag and was then allowed to unzip it again…
I made a few small adjustments:

♥ I cut the inside pocket out of my own fabric and instead used one of the fabric pieces intended for the inside pocket as the back. So I could even sew another 80s cassette bag with the remaining parts + additional inner fabric! I also used the more colorful inner part for the bottom of the bag.

♥ I didn’t sew around the webbing because I thought the color was so perfect! The bag accessories also go so well with it.
I attached a brown faux leather patch with a smiley face to one of the bag attachments. I stole the “80s Hits” lettering from the sewing kit for the little bags and sewed it onto the webbing.

♥ With great attention to detail, I stitched the front and back of the bag with yarn in a matching color. Thanks to the thicker insert (I used Style-Vil* here) you can now see it really well and everything is a little more three-dimensional – I really like it!

I definitely had a lot of fun! How do you like the finished bag? Have you ever sewn a bag and would a retro cassette bag like this be something for you?
